Swamphunter Posted April 26, 2007 Report Share Posted April 26, 2007 I robinhooded for the first time! Of course it was with my brand new wrapped GT's that I made for my Sask trip. The funny thin was the arrow was sticking out of the target (nock end) about 10 in". and the second arrow buried into the target so it looked like 1 nock on the face of the target, and 1 point sticking out the backside. Doc Posted April 27, 2007 Report Share Posted April 27, 2007 Mythbusters on the Discovery Channel tried to create a "robinhood" that replicated the old story of England's Robin Hood being able to do this on command, using wooden arrows (just like in the movie). The crireria was that the second arrow had to split the first in half from one end to the other (again, just like in the movie). They had all kinds of archers involved and even tried a shooting machine, and even shooting into a stack of several shafts that had been packed together. They never did get that perfect robinhood where the arrow was completely split from one end to the other. They always seemed to split out the side before going full length. Probably had to do with no wood grain ever being perfectly straight throughout a shaft. I believe that their conclusion was that it was not possible to be able to do this, "on command" any time the archer wanted. So, the question is, just how was that particular scene done, way back before computers. Somebody must have been able to do it. I know that Howard Hill sold his services to a lot of movie producers back then to pull off most (if not all) of the trick shots back then. However, from the experiments that they tried on Mythbusters, it looked like even he would have a hard time performing that one on que. I have never split any wooden shafts, but I have telescoped quite a few aluminum arrows back in the day before the novelty wore off and I learned to shoot at a 5-face target. I still have a few hanging in the basement on the wall. If it ever happens again, it will be because I pulled the shot so bad that it went into the wrong target.....lol. Actually, what I found when shooting 4 or 5 arrows at the same target was that even if the arrows didn't telescope, there was still a lot of vane and nock damage that got to be kind of aggravating in short order. I concur. I saw that Mythbusters you were talking about, and in the beginning of the show, I thought they were pretty stupid of how they were doing it. Did you see the size of those arrows? Geez, no wonder they couldn't get them to split. The guy they had at the end of the show shooting modern equipment, can't remember who it was, but he split a couple.
