Griz Posted May 9, 2007 Author Report Share Posted May 9, 2007 Funny Story... A long time back, my Uncle came out here from Calif. to do some fishing and what not. Anyways. He decided he wanted to fish Boggy Creek. Well him and my Dad took off. My dad said they weren't there 5 minutes when my Uncle started itching. After an hour went by he really started going crazy. Dad said that he told him that he got into the chiggers. My Uncle didn't know what the heck Dad was even talking about. Well by the time evening came around my Uncle had about enough and looking for anything to help the itching.I was going to tell him to take a bleach bath but my Dad told him that he heard black shoe polish will get rid of them and really helps a bunch... Oh yeah...You got it... When he came walking out of the bathroom in short pants with these black shoe polish spots over him I nearly fell out of my chair. I laughed so hard I had tears running down my face. It was the funniest thing I have ever seen... Well needless to say my Uncle hasn't been back to Oklahoma... We were in the kitchen and she looks down at her legs and yelled "Oh my god my mole is moving." I walk around the counter and look down. She had a dadgum tick on her leg. It was hilarious though. I can remember going camping in the mountains during the spawn. Everytime I would come home, I would be tore up with them. DSGB Posted May 9, 2007 Report Share Posted May 9, 2007 Take ya a good swaller of vinegar (apple cider vinegar will work) the night before and it'll keep ticks,chiggers, and red bugs away. Rhino Posted May 10, 2007 Report Share Posted May 10, 2007 We have chiggers, ticks, no see ums, horse flys, skeeters, but we don't have black flys. We usually don't have to deal with chiggers until mid to late May around here. They remain a problem until mid October unless we get some cool weather before then. You just have to do some preventive maintenance before walking around the woods in the summer around here. I keep an inventory of insect spray handy during the warmer months. Yep Dale, we got em too, and all those mentioned above along with deer flies. The deer flies are the worst I have ever seen them this early on in the year. Already having to spray the horses down regularly and cannot walk out past the garage without being attacked . Far as the chiggers, seems you asked this once before. Worst I have ever had them was after raking grass in the yard without a shirt on back after we first moved out here . I got them bad, and got a bit of sun too. Did not realize how bad it was til I got in the shower , not something I will likely ever forget. Keep poison down in the yard area now, seems to help some.
