How old were you?

How old were you when you bought your first house or went out on your own? I am 22 almost 23 and I am starting to freak out that I still live at home with my parents. I help them out with some bills so its not like i am free loading but i still feel the need to have to be out on my own for some reason. I just feel like since i am an adult now i should be on my own and kinda feel bad for not being. So i was just wondering what age everyone else was when they were out on their own.

I was 23. My wife, then my girlfriend, moved into our apartment in 1986, in 1991 we were married. 1996 we bought our home. My parents never cared that I stayed home until that age. They knew that I would be able to take care of myself.

Its tough to leave the nest! Its a scarey thing to do!

i was 18, and stole my 1st house. long story, and not for everyone. but, by age 22 (1969)i was married and bought my 1st new home with my wife. a 3 bedroom 2 bath ranch, full basement and single car garage for $15,400. in 1982, i bought a new chevy suburban that cost $16,400. now, the same home is $250,000, and cheap at that.

I joined the service when I was 18. 4 years later I came back home and lived with my dad for 2 years as I attended a Jr. College. When I finished my undergrad at The University of Toledo I moved back with my dad for 3 months then got married and we've been on our own ever since. I was 27 when I moved out for good, and when we bought our home I was 30.

I went on a 2 year church mission at 19, got married at 22, built a nice home at 23, had a kid at 24, and another at 26. It's been awesome. I am currently 27.

I was 23. After graduating from college in May of 1976 I lived with my parents until February of 1977 when I finally got a good job in another city. While living with them during that time though they insisted I pay them rent until I got my own place. When I moved out they gave all the $ back to me to buy furniture.

I left home for a short stint at 14, and then left home at 16 for good. Got married when I was 17.

Hey, in this day and age of 2 income families, stay home, and help your folks out as long as you can, while saving some money at the same time for your future. You're in a very fortunate position, as long as you don't take it for granted.;)

Joined the Air Force when I was 18. Bought my first house when I was 29.

I'd live at home as long as it's comfortable for you and your parents. Owning a house is expensive!

I moved out my senior year of college at 21... move back for a year when I was 24. I rented cheap apartments until I bought my first house almost 2 1/2 years ago when I was 30. I would stay there as long as you can and save as much as possible. Nothing to worry about, my brother still lives at home and he just turned 29.

When I was 18 I moved from Illinois to Minnesota with a buddy who had some family up there.I lived up there in a few rentals for about 4 years.I moved back to Illinois in 98 and shared a house with another buddy until I got married and bought a house in 2000.We just sold that house, and are living with the inlaws while we're building a new house which should be done in about a month and a half.

A view from the other side......

With a 20 year old son at home, you guys are making me nervous! Actually, he is away at school for 9 months out of the year, and I miss hunting with him in the fall. He has an apartment for the year, but works back home in the summer.

I guess it would depend on how you and Dad get along. I think two strong willed males can butt heads in the same house. My Son and I do at times, but my worry now is he will move too far away for us to hunt and hang out together. Enjoy your time with Dad and see what happens.

Married at 21, moved into an apartment for about a year. Bought an acre on the river and added a mobile home. Had it about a year and bought a small house in my home town (around the age of 24). Sold it about 2 years later, moved into an apartment while I looked for land to build, didn't find anything and at roughly 28 I finally found a house I could add on to and some land I could do something with. Ill be 31 in a few months and we are still there. We probably wont move again.

This is an interesting story. I actually owned my first house (not my home though) at 15. My grandad had a rent house that he left me when he died. I owned it through high school and saved most of the rent to help me pay for college. I also worked and got a student loan. I sold the rent house and bought my first home at 18 when I started college. The rent around campus was ridiculous, so I found a little 2 bedroom 1 bath frame house about 5 miles from campus and bought it to live in while I was in school. Sold it four years later for what I had in it and moved back to my hometown. I've always owned my own home except for a few brief months when I was between houses.

I wouldn't be too concerned about living at home at your age. I did it for a while, and wish I would have done it longer. I bought my first house at 25, and burned through my savings the first month of owning it.

Looking back now, the best idea would have been for Sarah and I to live with our parents and save as much as possible. But we didn't because we felt like we had to make the move ASAP. Never a good idea. As long as they're not driving you crazy, hang in there and save as much $$ as you can...believe me, you'll need it.

I moved out for the first time a little over a year ago at age 23. The college I attended was in the same town as my high school, which was about 10 minutes from my parents. I didnt see a point in spending a ton of money for some rundown apartment when I could just live at home. I'm glad I did because that gave me the chance to save money which I am certainly needing now that I have moved out.
