dfol20
I am going duck hunting this year for the first time. I got a lab a year and half ago and really want to get him into ducks. where do I start. The equipment I have to work with is a dozen mallard decoys and a few calls. I don't have a boat at this point, so I am going to concentrate on places I can walk too and hunt from land. I live in missouri, around KC so I hope there is plenty of places to go. How do I know what places will be good come hunting season? My goal this season is to get my dog some birds, so thanks for the help.
coles
i would say that you should start by just practicing or training your dog on retrieving and stuff and maybe a few trips to the trap range. then in about early august and on throught the month find public places to go and scout them out. Keep watching them until season starts and get after em!!!!
DU_man_84
How do I know what places will be good come hunting season? scouting, scouting, and more scouting, that is about 70% of the battle if you want to shoot ducks, you gotta know where the birds are at, and where they are going, where there eating, and where they roost, that is a major contributor to shooting ducks, if you do your homework, you will definately be rewarded with that A+
dfol20
how do you go about scouting for waterfowl? Just sit around some of the water in the area? Where do you concentrate your scouting?
DU_man_84
how do you go about scouting for waterfowl? Just sit around some of the water in the area? Where do you concentrate your scouting? well we do it by boat, or by truck if we are looking at some of our fields, i seen you dont have a boat, if you got places you can access by shore watch them, start looking as soon as ya can just to get an idea where they might be at and watch real close when the season approaches, which will give ya a even better idea what the birds want, starting looking in backwaters in lakes or rivers, main lake points can be big producers sometimes if the wind is right, ponds if you have access, bays in rivers, backwaters, sloughs, anything that might be able to get ducks out of the wind on windy days, flooded grasses are great feeding areas for waterfowl, places where there is water but waterfowl have easy access to shore like sand bars flat grounds that run right into water, around here we notice that alot of the birds hang in the same spots year after year, but when we hunt we try to set up in different areas, different sides, try not to be the same all the time as the birds can educate real fast, later in the year when the divers come in watch certain areas, cause divers seem to like more open water areas, some of these things outa help ya out,
