okiedog Posted June 26, 2007 Report Share Posted June 26, 2007 I'am not scared of the dark myself, but my wife is:D. My dad was scared of the dark until he went into the service. He always told me my grandfather use to scare him alot as a kid, so he figured thats where it came from. Funny story how my dad got broke of it. He was station at Fort Polk, La for basic. He said one night they dropped him off in the swamp to guard an outhouse. They left him with nothing but a gun with no bullets. Guest DaveGP Posted June 26, 2007 Report Share Posted June 26, 2007 i have never been afraid of the dark in my house but when i was little the woods frightened me. whenever we would jump a deer in the dark i would flip out thinking something was coming to get me. now i just laugh because i know they are more afraid of me. Like said above my imagination is what gets me, I will be walking to my stand and think i hear something so i will stop and listen, Now that i am getting older it does not bother me as much as it used to. buckee Posted June 26, 2007 Report Share Posted June 26, 2007 I'm not afraid of the dark, but there are a couple of places I go hunting where there's just too many bears, and I've had just too many close bear encounters. I used to walk in there in the dark, and breath a sigh of relief once up in my stand, but since the last couple of encounters, I now wait until it's just breaking daylight, before walking in. leatherneck Posted June 26, 2007 Report Share Posted June 26, 2007 Ok this happened to me 2 weekeds ago. I was down in Alice Tx. hog hunting. When I got to the blind I was gonna sit in, I noticed that someone had left a widow open. I carefully opened the door and sure enough 2 barn owls flew out. Just about knocked me off the ladder. There were some eggs up there so I got them down and placed them in the nest up in a tree next to the blind, I didnt know what else to do. Well I got the blind cleaned out and came back for the evening hunt. I had the front and the right side windows open. I was just sitting there in a daze looking down the road for hogs, and right about dark one of those dang owls decided to come home. He or she flew right through the front window about 8 inches from my face. All I saw was big white wings coming at me. I SCREAMED like a little girl and chunked my coke at it not knowing what was going on. It took a quick left and went out the side window. The rest of the hunt was shot. I just about wet myself . Don't want to risk educating the deer to my presence. I don't use a flashlight when I head out before dawn to get in position to turkey hunt either. Now I do know some hunters that must be afraid of the dark but won't admit it. Why...because those dummies leave their stand ~30 minutes before legal shooting hours end so they can get out of the woods before dark. I try not to think about that movie while I'm in my stand. Bears are not as prevalent down her as up north, but we do have them. Coyotes probably are a bigger threat. LOL...:D Yeah buddy we sure did... I have a little story to tell you yall... About 4 or 5 years ago I had a young man who just got into bow hunting came over to for a deer hunt one time... When he shows up we headed out and it is dark and I do mean one of those black out type mornings. No moon or stars. It wasn't going to break light for a good 1 - 1 1/2 hours. After I get ready we head to the woods. We didn't get 5 feet inside the woods when the youngman stops me and says, Dale do you have a flashlight... I said no, we don't need one. Well from that point I thought I was going to have to carry him to the stand. This guy was about to loose it. I have never seen anybody so scared in my life. We walked a good 200 yards in and all of a suddenly I would stop and say"What the heck is that". Let me tell you know. That was the worst thing I have ever done. I thought I was going to have to give him a piggy back ride to the stand... Everytime we heard alittle noise, He kept asking me "What's That"..."Did you hear that"...LOL... I kept telling him to calm down that everything is going to be alright but to keep his eyes open for Bigfoot...LOL... He told me that I was crazy...LOL... Anyway once we got to the stand and it started breaking light he was fine... The sad thing is...He never went huntin' with me again...LOL... With someone else, it's no problem(and no, I'm not talking about a girl). If I need to walk around outside after dark for a while, I strap on my mini-mag and my pistol, then I'm good. Then I can see what makes noise, and if neccessary, I can shoot it. The screams of a mountain lion at 5AM heard by my brother, a calf with a head and 2 hooves left after an overnight feast 1 mile away under a yard light, and a sighting in a nearby hayfield while swathing by the son of the calf-owner, a visual confirmation of a young lion at 12 feet by my brother in the seedhouse, the sighting of a litter of lion cubs and the tracks to confirm it by my neighbor(tracks noted by yours truly), etc. have all contributed to my somewhat uneasiness about the dark in these parts.
