beagleboy
Has anyone ever had these shots and if so how have they helped? I starting to have back pain again. Had back surgery back in Oct 05 and everything went great. I went back to work 100% and I felt great. Then back in Dec 06 I got rear-ended by some idiot who applied his brakes at the last moment and slammed into me doing 45mph. The next day I felt the back pain. I was doing physical therapy and taking pain killers and its only gotten me so far. I stayed home today due to the pain and went to the docs office and he recommended I see an ortho for some cotisone shots. Wondering who has had them and how they feel
brownie65
I get the steroid shots in my back. Can get up to 3 a year. Usually they don't bother me but the last one hurt real bad. Hurt for a few days afterwards. As far as how they work. Depends, I have gotten some that worked for several months & some that have worked for a couple of weeks & some that have worked for just a few days. I think alot of it depends on your job. I have a very physical job, one that is hard on a body, I think that has alot to do with the amount of time they work. They tell me every time I get a shot that I need to do something else. Don't see that happening though. I put off getting these epidurals until I can't hardly stand it anymore. The needle is huge & it is not any fun. I also don't like taking the pain drugs. Have taken them for several years now. You know they can't be good for your insides. I take way to many pills in a day but hey have to work & make a living. If you have never had one & your back pain is real bad, my suggestion is to get it done. They can work from a day to a year. Hopefully yours will last a long time. Good Luck
OJR
I just had back surgery and was offered shots but went with the surgery instead! My back is coming along just great! I have a couple more weeks of PT and then I am done! I believe those shots are just a band-aid and you are not really correcting the problem! I would see an orthopedic surgeon and have a MRI done to see what the real problem is! Good luck!
elkoholic
ouch Strangely enough, I had an ESI in my neck (C5-6) just this afternoon and can only say that it was not that bad of an experience. Whether or not I get the desired results is another story. My wife has had several with a mixed bag of results. The first step is to be seen at an orthopedic clinic. They will need to do x rays and probably a MRI to be able to tell what is going on. Then, and only then, can the orthopod and you make an informed decision on how to best treat the problem. Very possibly an oral anti-inflammatory along with physical therapy could do the trick. Steroid injections, while not always helpful, can also be diagnostic and often times reduce the inflammation enough to allow the area to heal on it's own. One thing to keep in mind, it is often easier to achieve favorable results with an acute injury than a chronic back pain situation. When it comes to surgery, I have witnessed far too many disappointed people who expected to be "fixed" by their surgeries and, depending on the problem, went back to doing what caused the problem to begin with, ending up back where they started. From personal experience and my interactions with patients in my job as a pharmacist I believe that once a bad back, always a bad back. There are few exceptions. You can make it better, but, it will never be the same. Go see an orthopod and get a good diagnosis. Then make an informed decision on the best treatment option for you. I feel your pain. Good luck! wtnhunt
Had a cortisone shot in my arm, wrist area once. NEVER AGAIN will I let a physician, a highly recommended specialist in this case, talk me into something against my better judgement. It hurt, the pain which was far worse than the original problem took about a week to go away, then my problem was still there with poor mobility and pain in my arm around my wrist into my forearm where it had been broken a few times before. Last few times I have been in to our family physician for back problems, they have prescribed me steroids, which I really don't think helped me much at all. Would follow elkoholic's advice above and see an orthopaedic specialist before making any decisions.
