Check out the MD DNR web page

Muzzleloader Regulations

Muzzleloading rifles and shotguns may be used to hunt upland game (shotgun only for dove and woodcock), forest game, woodchuck, fox, coyote, opossum, nutria, fisher, skunk and raccoon. Muzzleloading rifles may not be used to hunt turkey during the spring season.

Muzzleloaders used for deer hunting must be at least .40 caliber in size and use not less than 60 grains of black powder (or a black powder equivalent) and propel one all-lead, lead alloy or copper soft-nosed or expanding bullet or ball at a single discharge. Sabot loads are legal.

It is permissible to hunt deer with a muzzleloading rifle or shotgun in all counties. Telescopic sights may be used on a muzzleloader during Firearms or Muzzleloader Seasons statewide.

Flintlock, percussion cap, and inline ignition muzzleloaders are legal hunting devices. To be considered a muzzleloader, a rifle, shotgun or handgun must be loaded from the muzzle, and a revolver must be loaded from the front of the cylinder.

Re: Maryland hunters?

I think I was with the guy you are thinking. I got into this at the last minute as a couple friends had booked it. I myself would not have chosen him but I wanted to hunt with firends. I actually had no expectations of shooting a buck to my standards (130 or better) there but we didn't even see a buck that would gross 90. The property was clearly overhunted. I hunt Iowa, Illinois, or Missouri every year for my "trophies" this was to see if there waas something worthwhile a short drive from home that would better than I had here. His place was not the answer but I think there would be another. I would really like to find my own lease there somewhere so if anyone has any connections, let me know.

There are big deer in MD

there are big deer in maryland! where? I have been hunting the same properity for 20 years now. I have taken 3 "mountable" deer (120 class) from this properity.

I will say, the eastern shore can have big deer (130/140) but you are luckey if you see them. in my opion maryland deer could be just as big as the midwest deer, but people shoot the first thing that walks past them in these parts not alowing small bucks to grow up.

I would never waste my time or money to hunt deer in this state if I did not live here. I'ed go west.

Re: Maryland hunters?

Passing the 130's is how you shoot 150's is true. The problem is that containing them on your property is difficult and unless all the neighbors also pass your efforts are for nothing. the guys I hunt with here in PA do pass on many bucks. We try to shoot 120 or better in our area but several that we pass get shot elsewhere. I'm sure it is the same in MD. The property I hunted was 1200 acres - 900 acre crop in one piece surrounded by 300 acres of Timber. Some of this timeber was less than 100 yards wide to the property lines. Not very likely that all the "trophy" bucks stay on this farm, particularly when pressured

Re: Maryland hunters?

dakndug nice deer. where was it taken? sure there is a chance you can take a 150+ deer if you have a deep pocket and can lease a big farm or are lucky to be able to hunt a place that backs to lochraven/gunpowder state park.

If I may say it seems as if here you realy need to get lucky to see a 120+ deer. where in the mid west (wile I have not been there to see first hand) it seems that is all you see. I know md could sustain big bucks in large # but we as hunters and the dnr realy need to work together to see that the "little" (>120") bucks live to see at least their 3ed b-day. It realy makes me mad knowing that because jo smoe next prop. over kills any thing. I for one, will not shoot anything under 120" on my 10 acres. but again jo smoe will. I just seem to be pissing in the wind and it is not working. my buddy and I were talking the other day, all we want is a place that we can see 120" deer most times out and be able to pass them up cause of larger deer.

Re: Maryland hunters?

I have tryed in years past. I did get one to "change" his ways. but that leaves 6+ guys to change and they are agenest it. even with the one guy he only owns 6 or 7 acres. so combined with mine we are still only talking 17 acres at most where little ones can safly live with out getting shot (untill they cross on to the neighbors properity).

I'm begening to think large deer are a lost cause around here.

on another note. the issue of trasspassing limits the deer as well. every year we have guys that hunt 80 acres that backs up to us. well I know they don't belong there. I have talked to the owner be phone and letters about hunting his properity in order to keep out the trasspasers. he is anti hunting and will not alow me or others to hunt. that is why I know they don't belong. but when I tell him there are guys all over his land nothning is done. confused.gif

as much as I hate to see the state stick there nose in to my activies, I wish there was a way the dnr could mandate the hunting of bucks and so forth.
