Jeramie
I may very well go on my first dove hunt this Saturday. We have them everywhere around here but ive never hunted them. A guy I work with asked me to go so Im seriously considering it. Anyway, I have a Franchi semi auto 12-ga and a Remington semi-auto 12ga but the Remington is HEAVY. I also have a Mossberg pump (12ga) and access to a pump 20ga (Mossberg). Also in the armory is a Remington semi auto 28ga. Im a great shot with either of the pumps but lack a little with the semi autos short of the 28ga. In Okieland you have to have a plug and can only hold 3-shells. What do you think would be my best bet? * Mossberg 500T (12ga) im deadly accurate but its a pump and short barrel because of the Turkey barrel (hence the T). * Franchi semi auto 12ga. Light great gun but ive only shot it a handful of times and im not nearly as good as a shot with this gun. However it does have a LONG barrel. * Or the 28ga, light and accurate. Long barrel but what about knock down power? Help!
Tominator
First of all, I think a plugged gun is the law wherever you go. Migratory bird, thus the 3 shot rule. As far as guns, 12's are fine with light loads of 7.5 or even 8's. I'll use 9 if I'm forced to, but never in a high wind. A 28 would be fun I think, you would just have to really discipline yourself on shot selection. Depending on choke, I'd say you are pretty limited in range with the 28. I hunt with a 20 Imp. Cyl. all the time, and as long as I discipline myself to the anything inside say 35 yards, I'm in good shape. Another thing to consider is the reduced recoil with the semis as you are likely to be taking a lot of shots. The first couple times out for me I usually go through at least 2 boxes. I would think 12 ga. ammo would be a lot cheaper than the 28. All things considered, I'd go with the 28 if you can afford the ammo, or the 12 I'm most accurate with. You're going to love it. Next thing you know you'll be like me, forget the squirrels, let's bust some doves.
WaCoyote
Bring the semi. You'll miss a ton anyways but it'll be a blast so you don't need the gun you shoot the best. The first time I went I shot 48 rounds for 10 doves. I've figured them out since then but you'll still shoot a lot. Last year I shot 22 rounds for 10 on the opener. I use a SxS for that quick followup shot but have used pumps as well. If I had a semi it'd be my first choice. 28 would be fun but those little buggers are hard to hit. The more pellets you throw out there the better the chances are you'll contact. Or heck, just bring both. I bring out a couple shotguns typically on a dove shoot just in case. Shaun_300
I'd be definetly bringing the 28ga! That's my favourite shotgun there is. Hey if you ever want to sell that thing let me know.
