I was confident I made a great hit and my dad and I went after her with flashlights. We had good blood and followed it...and followed it and followed it some more until our batteries died...2 hours worth of following good blood until we had no lights left and was forced to walk out of the woods in the dark. After a long upsetting night and day at work I went out this afternoon and picked up the trail. I found her about 150 yards from where we lost the lights. As I thought the shot had been a great one. Entering the rib cage on the right side and exiting under her left shoulder. I dont understand how she could have even began to go this far. I shot her with the same broadhead I have used for the last few years ( steel force 100 grain ) and the last 5 deer I have shot have not went more than 100 yards each. You should have waited a minimum of 1/2 hr. to give her a chance to lay down and peacefully expire. You'd be surprised, as I'm sure you are now, how far a pushed animal can run on adrenalin. You should have waited a minimum of 1/2 hr. to give her a chance to lay down and peacefully expire. You'd be surprised, as I'm sure you are now, how far a pushed animal can run on adrenalin. Tony Posted October 27, 2007 Report Share Posted October 27, 2007 i agree, if you do not see the deer go down, then you must assume the deer is just out of sight bedded down. wait the 1/2 hour and then find your arrow and evaluate. sometimes they just go a long way. but if you said you had good blood and you followed it for 2 hours, man thats a long way. you might want to invest into a good coleman gas lantern. they last a long time on one tank and make trailing blood at night a lot eaiser. was the deer still good or did the meat get runined? mule659 Posted October 27, 2007 Author Report Share Posted October 27, 2007 The thing is we did wait over a half hour...I had to wait for him to make the drive from his house which is about 20 miles or so from where I shot the deer. I am sad to say I was unable to salvage the meat...the temp got up high enough that she was no good by the time I was able to get to her. I have shot deer right behind the shoulder and had them run for 200 yards + and then i have shot deer a little far back or high and had them go about ten yards and fall over. i think maybe it has to do with the deer. there like us where were not all the same some people are just tuffer than others, maybe like deer? i know its tuff loosing a deer, but i mean how are you suppose to look for a deer without flashlights? don't be to hard on yourself!! get out there a stick another one Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I shot a doe with a 3in slug out of my fully riffled slug gun, i hit her right behind the sholder on one side of our property, she jumped a fence and ran to my dad where he shot her hit her a little far back she ran into some tall grass and we lost her, we followed blood for 3/4 of a mile and NEVER found the deer. 2. I did a deer drive and kicked a buck out to my dad, he hit it in the leg on first shot and took it most of the way off, second was quatering away and layed buck down, i steped out of woods in time to see buck get up jump a fence on to neighbors property, heard 2 more shots, went over to help track, first guy took front leg the rest of the way off (it was laying on the ground), second guy hit it at 8 yards with a 3in 10 gage buck shot, blood EVERY WHERE, the 4 of us. me, dad and 2 other guys tracked for 300 yards and 2 days never found it. 3. (THIS ONES GREAT) Dad shot a doe she fell over he poked her to see if she was dead, didn't move, dad and uncle laid down guns to field dress, I set gun down to walk off and take a leak, i turned are to the dow standing up lookin at my dad and unlce gloved and knife in hand, neighbor shot her next day, said she had a patch of skin and hair missin...right behind her head, best we can tell he just knocked her out for a minuet.
