Keep in mind I do not have kids, but to answer the question when does a kid NEED a cell phone? My answer would be, NEVER.

I made it through grade school, high school and most of college without one, as did probably 95% of the people on these forums and we all turned out just fine (I know, that is questionable statement but, I digress ).

I used to think the same way, John. But now that I have kids, I realize that once they become responsible enough to use one, then I will get them one. The way I see it, if they need me, I'm just a phone call away. Same goes if I'm worried about them.

BTW--voted 14 to 15...but by the time my kids get that age, cell phones will probably be obsolete.:D

Yep, agree with that, but with today's world as it is, seems every other middle school age kid or in some cases, most middle school age kids have a phone.

i made it without one. and look how great i came out. lol. let's face it, kids do not NEED a cell phone. it is a convenience. kids in high school do not need a car, but it seems most have them. we spoil kids with all kinds of things they dont need. when they get a job, they can decide if they want to spend their hard earned money on a cell phone, and creat/pay for their own need.

William,

From what I see here at my school, I would say 6th or 7th grade. I would also say when they start a school activity and/or sport or whenever they are away from you. I see plenty of kids who stay after school for practice or a game and then it gets cancelled for weather or whatever reason. Then they need to call home and notify their parents for a ride home. I would turn off the text messaging till they are mature enough to handle it.

BTW? When I clicked on the vote button the forum took me to a turkey room thread?? Did that happen to anyone else??

OK, I have got to ask this question and going to try to put up a poll. At what age does a kid really NEED a cell phone? I mean at what age, when a kid is not playing sports and only has regular school activities and a home phone available.

if they are not playing sports and involved only in regular school activities...then they really don't. Now that my girls are involved in sports and extra curriculars...They have one. Not really for them...but for our sake. They call when they need to be picked up, or if the team bus is running late. stuff like that. It's convienient and makes me feel like thay are safer.

I think it depends on the kid. If they are responsible enough (up to the parent) to use it properly, and if the are always in need of communicating (meaning, play sports year round, stuff like that, extracurricular activities) then I'd say around 14-15. Can't tell you how many times i could have used one back when i was in 8th grade in up, after football games, just going to watch basketball or hockey games, my tennis matches. even just hanging out with friends somewhere, say at a movie or at the mall or something. but i still think it all depends on the kid and how responsible he/she is.

oh, and not only did the poll send me to a thread in the turkey room...but it was one that had its last post back in march:eek::D

As usual I did not vote on a poll if my answer is not there.:D

When we had a regular cell phone they used it when it was necessary like for trips and events.

Where we live now there is not much coverage available so all we use is a Tracphone. They take it when going to Zanesville on a date but their girl friends have a cell phone of their own.:D

They even said themselves that they really do not need one because besides their GF's everybody else has one and we do not need the bill.

Yeah, it took me to the turkey room too, think that is happening for everyone. Seems to some issues with polls, this one is not the only one that does that.

Really, it is pretty amazing just how many kids do have phones in the middle school. My oldest daughter(eleven) wants one, but she most certainly does not need one. She does not currently participate in any sports, my wife or myself transport her too and from school both ways, and the rationale that everyone else has one simply does not fly with me.
