elk hunting with a muzzleloader

Recommended Posts

That sounds like a great hunt. As far as range it depends on what make of gun, type of powder and bullet. Do you know what powder and bullets you will be using yet ? Most good bullets will put an elk down when hit well, accuracy with your gun is the most important thing to consider. 150 yards should be within your reach if you are accurate out to that range.

Cal------Not sure which state you will be hunting. Here in Colorado you have to use open sites & sabots & jacket bullets are illegal also. You have to shoot a round ball or a bullet like the T/C Maxi Ball. I use a 54 T/C Renegrade. I shoot 120 grains of FF & a 470 grain Maxi-Ball. I feel OK out to about 100 yards & not much further. I've killed several bulls with the gun. Problem I've found is that they don't bleed------The chest just fills up with blood. You'll need to shoot at least a 50 Cal to be legal here in Colorado. I don't think there's much difference in the 50 & 54. Good Luck----CB
