climbers for semi perm setups?

Has anyone here ever used a climber setup for a semi permanent stand? Wal mart has a deal too that is just about too good to pass up on gorilla climbers. The price is about half the original price on these stands. I really dont need another climber, love my summit, but got to thinking, if I picked up one of these stand for $75 I could use it with a stick ladder. So long as I check it each time I use it to make sure it is solid, it would in effect be the same thing as a hang on wouldn't it? They had stick ladders marked from $40 down to I think $19 too.

The seat is about the same as the seat on my summit, looks really comfortable. The stand they have is the same as this one, minus the foot rest, shooting rest, and the pads on the bars. They still had 5 of them. Seriously thinking about having my wife pick one up this afternoon on her way through.

that is a great deal.

and 19 for the climbing sticks....MAn wish our wally world had that deal :(

Now as for the question at hand......I guess it could work... I would be a little skeptical about getting in and out of it... You will have 2 pieces to work with versus just one of a portable. SO I would be afraid I would get hung up or have troubles getting in and out. Plus a portable is hung on the tree and uses the weight of the stand to hold it against the tree....a climber uses your weight to help hold it against the tree....and you are going to be removing that weight so I would think it would not be as safe......

Maybe you could attach it someway to the tree to make it more secure....

Just my .02 on the idea....:)

Yeah Todd, I realize that I would have to use ratchet straps on it to leave it there, and would also have to rig a tether type climbing restraint for safety similar to what I use on my other hangon.

I called my wife a while ago. She is going to pick one up on her way home, granted they have not sold all 5 of them. Think I may try to use it as a hang on setup and see how it works out. If nothing else for the rare occasion my wife and I both get to go, she could use one and me the other, that deal is really just too good to pass up.

They had some great deals on what they had marked down. They still had some stuff not clearanced that I have my eyes on too, mainly chickory seed.

Why not just leave it as a climber and just don't take it off the tree.

I did that a couple years ago. I found a good spot for my climber, set it up and left it there all year. I had a peice of plastic that I left on the seat when I left in case it rained.

It was nice not having to pack it in.

I have an older loggy lite climber that I just made into a hang on. It's alot more stable than most hang ons. A platform is a platform I don't see why it wouldn't work, works great for me. I would not like the 2 piece one though, loggys are nice b/c they have a seat attached to the bottom piece.

I did this last year. My WalMart had them for sale for 35.00 so I bought 5 of them for this very purpose. I found that I never did it really. I left a couple of them out and rarely used them. I still used my main climber 90% of the time.

I also noticed the steel started to rust and I was worried about the safety factor with a deteriorating stand. I also felt it was too dangerous to get in and out of it at height, so I left them down at the base of the tree. This made them visible and I worried about theft. I also worried about the deer noticing they were no longer there to then look up for them to see me in it.

I did this because I didn't want to hike in with these heavy steel stands. Well I shifted gears and sold them all for more than 35.00 at a profit. I then used the funds to buy a Lone Wolf that hikes in with ease. I'm much happier doing it this way. It's quiet, quick, and light. I always have it with me now so I don't worry about theft or spooking deer with the change of scenary.

That is a consideration John, and I have pretty well done that with my summit stand the past two seasons. Just thinking for convenience and quiet entry it would be easier going up a stick ladder than climbing in the climber, but guess we will see. Surprisingly wal mart did still have all 5 of the stands when my wife got one.

Have you attached it to the tree yet??

Let us know how it works....pics if possible ;);):):)

Still in the box Todd, however I did pull out the instructions and look over to make sure everything was there. Will be pulling my old summit climber and hangon stand over this coming weekend, might take it out of the box and try it out.

Let us know what you think about it William. I've been a strong supporter of Gorilla's, but only because they are the same thing as the Ol man's. I'd never actually used a Gorilla until the other day. I used a Greyback (think it sells for 200), and it was the worst stand i'd ever used. It's two years old, and everything about it is still so tight. The seat wouldnt even move like it is suppose to for climbing.

BTW- My dad has the same exact stand, and it is fine. Maybe my uncle just got the bad one of the batch.
