Refinishing a stock

Tung oil will give a good hard finish. I typically use Tru Oil. It will take many coats to get it to the point of ready to use. I suggest giving the stock an annual treatment of oil after the season. It will keep it looking new.

Don't use the sandpaper on every coating of oil. All that is for is sealing the grain. Once the grain is sealed, do not sand. Rub the oil into the stock and allow it to dry between coats.

Re: Refinishing a stock

i just finished my stock and forend for my encore with tungoil finish and it has really come out great. one of the things i was told and it works well is to rub the tung oil finish with fingers and thumbs and then let it set for about 15 minutes then rub it in again. also when applying the stain or tung oil finish get some good 0000 steelwool and use it to smooth out the finish after you make sure it is bone dry and then take your fingers and rub in one more coat. if you send me your email address i can send you a pic or two of the finish and the thumbhole stock it was my first time and i like it even if it was my first lol
