How do you get your younger kids to try new foods? I'm trying to get my 7 year old son to try some Broccoli. I'm not having much luck. LOL My 2 year old daughter absolutely loves it and says to my son, "broky, broky"! She even took his fork full and said "I eat it"!! LMBO! Any suggestions??

I don't have any kids, but I have a bunch of younger cousins who I spend a lot of time with. there are two that practically live with us...one is 7 and one is 5, boths boys, I always try to get them to try new stuff, the 5 year old will try darn near everything if I ask him a few times, I don't throw out a whole portion of it, i'll just take a tiny bit on a spoon or fork and say here taste it...sometimes it takes a "i will guarantee you'll like it, if not i'll give you a dollar"...and trust me, I can tell if he doesn't like something, most of the time I end up winning though :D

The 7 year old will eventually try it if the younger one likes it and asks for some on his plate (i think its the "i'm the older brother, I can't let him beat me, if he can eat it then I can to":D

we used a simple tactic. they had to try everything we put before them, twice, on two different occasions. if they didn't like it, so be it. but, they had to try.

now, my parents were a bit different. they gave us a serving, and we had to eat it. we simply sat at the table and ate it, or wait until bedtime. in the morning, it was on the table for breakfast. if we didn't eat, we got it for lunce... you get the idea. sooner or later, we ate it. and sooner or longer we did, and were so hungry it usually tasted pretty good. they would do that once on everything, then we could refuse future servings. i was not good with acorn squash as a kid, but now i like it.

what you are really looking at is a kid who wants to tell you what to do. if you fail, get used to being told no....

I don't make my kids try anything they don't want to. Chances are if you make them try something that they don't want to, they will quickly tell you they don't like it. There are several things my kids wouldn't eat in the past but they try more & more different things all the time. I would just give them time. When they are ready to try something they will. If you make them try something there is a very good chance they will just spit it out & say they don't like it.

We always said to my daughter, that she had to try at least two bites, before she could say she didn't like something. Then if she still didn't like it, we'd laugh and say "Well, I guess your taste buds haven't matured yet" :D

As time went on, she used to try something, and all proud of herself, would say "My taste buds are matured":D

She likes everything now:D

The worst thing you can do is force a child to eat everything on their plate. IMO

My Dad used to force feed us until we puked. But that's a whole other story.:(

Cover it with cheese!:p

:) yep, that'll help!!!

I noramlly make my kids try something a couple times before I let them get away with not eating stuff. if the 9 yr old refuses to try something he'll be sitting at the supper table a long time...........

He always caves and trys it, I am far more bullheaded than he is ;)

Now my 2 little ones will eat about anything you put in front of them

I'm not a parent, nor do I want to be anytime soon, but from my experience, kids really do need to eat "some" of everything whenever it's served. My mom always made us eat at least as many bites of each thing as we were years old. I used to hate tomatoes, and a few other things, but now, I will eat pretty much anything that someone sets before me unless it is simply completely humanly inedible. Some squash still doesn't agree with me, but it's mainly the texture. Anyway, IMHO, kids need to eat some of everything mommy makes, and get used to it. I get irritated at alot of kids that just plum say "I don't like that, and the list of things they will eat is alot shorter than the list of things they won't eat.

.if they dont like it try another recipe that hides it like a casserole.
Great ideas but, it was in a cheesy chicken casserole. ;) He has had it before and ate it perfectly fine. Well, one day he tried it raw and he decided he didn't like it anymore. I don't like it raw either. He finally finished a whole fork full  before he got dessert. And even smirked a bit when I asked him if he liked it. ;):) Thanks everyone!

For dinner, we always try to make at least 2 veggies to go with whatever meat and "starch" we have. My son knows he has to eat all of at least one of the veggies. Usually he ends up eating all of them, but if that doesn't work we use the old' stand-by "Don't you want to be big and strong like daddy? I always ate my veggies..." Worked so far. :)
