aksheephuntress Posted February 25, 2008 Report Share Posted February 25, 2008 ...We had a major rescue operation this past weekend ,in a hard-to-access area in our community. A group of Russians from Wasilla(most of them are in Homer)...came down to snowmahine up in the Lost Lake area.Depending on the weather, a lot of people get turned around in there, each winter...but this time, it was the first break in the weather...a gorgeous, blinding,sunny day...they were"high-marking" up in the high country, two collided, and one guy suffered a bad protruding compound fracture of the femur...luckily, the helicopter could land in there. Our local vol. FD was able to stabilize him with the team by snow machine,first. ...lots of locals helped out with the rescue, and with equipment/ victim's family support. .....So many people just take for granted how important it is to be cautious in the backcountry!!....No place to horse around, in my opinion.... .......I do wish him a speedy recovery,though....and thank God the chopper could see to land. Hoosierbuck Posted February 25, 2008 Report Share Posted February 25, 2008 That is one thing I did notice in my time in AK...people still look out for each other quite a bit up there. I did some hitchhiking, and people don't just blow past you, even if you are carrying a rifle! High-marking causes a lot of trouble that is not necessary. It's a fun game, but IMO not worth the risks. Remember Rulon Gardner, the olympic wrestler? He got into big trouble and lost toes playing that game.
