bfletch7441 Posted April 22, 2008 Report Share Posted April 22, 2008 My wife and kids ride with me from Tulsa to Stillwater when I go to school. They go to the park and play or do some shopping while I'm in school then they take me back to work. Well, on our way back to Tulsa yesterday, we end up behind an Oilton Police car. JaLynn and I both notice a strong smell of gas coming from it, but we come up on a light and he turns. As he's turning I look over and notice, his car is on fire! JaLynn turns and speeds up to catch him and tell him. We finally get him pulled over and out of the car and about the time we get away from it about 10 feet, flames are pouring from the wheel wells and around the hood. An oilfield worker pulls up and has a fire extinguisher and sprays it down the best he can, but it's too late. The policeman had shut his door as he got out, and when the oilfield guy ran out of chemical in the fire extinguisher, the two front door windows blow out and flames come shooting out of them. We're all standing back in amazement of it all, and kind of shocked by how fast it all happened. The fire department finally showed up and got it put out, but it was definitely 10 minutes I'll always remember. It had to look funny with me holding our 3 year old and JaLynn holding our 10 month old standing around sipping on a Coke from Sonic watching this cop car burn. On a side note, after the cab became engulfed, we stopped traffic and watched from 50-75 yards away in case the gas tank blew, so no one was in danger, but still, it was quite a site! Those cars get pretty constant abuse due to harsh driving conditions (stop and go is the worst thing for cars) which are the nature of police patrol. My sister in law and her husband lost their car in a fire about a week and a half ago. Fortunately they were not hurt, the car possibly had an issue with a coil shorting out, my sister in laws husband had just put a new intake on it the week before. I'm on our fire department back home, and we had a call during winter, a guy smelled gas going around 1 curve, the next curve, about 50 yards later, he saw flames shooting out from the hood, he pulled over, got out, and no sooner than he got out, he said it just blew up, he wasn't injured but the car was a total loss. Somewhat lucky for Oilton because now they get to buy one of the new Charger Cruisers. Unlucky for anyone getting pulled over in Oilton because they'll be paying for that new Charger.
