I was reading all the plans for this weekend and it seems everyone has lost sight of the reason for having "Memorial Day"!:(:(:(

All fun and games and nothing about paying homage to the ones who went before us or gave their lives so we can be free!:(:(

Not happy to see these results!:mad::mad:

The "best" Memorial Day I ever had was spent in washington D.C. visiting Arlington and the memorials. That was very moving. While not on Memorial Day, I have also visited National Cemeteries at Gettysbugh, Punchbowl (Hawaii), and Normandy. I like to think I pay my respects more than just once a year, I am grateful daily to live free. I fly my flag on my porch proudly, and in conformity to the Falg Code (not in inclement weather, tkaen down at night unless illuminated, etc.) Thanks to those who served, serve, and sacrifice.

After being in the military for nearly 35 years everyday is Memorial Day. Yes I get a little sad that there are people that seem not to pause and reflect even on the day set aside for just that. I suggest that whatever each of us do on Memorial Day at least give a few moments pause to give thanks for our freedoms and those that gave it all or are now giving so much for us to be free to do what we want. Just the other day I stopped a uniformed young man and just looked him in the eye shook his hand and said a heartfelt thank you. He just beamed at the jesture. Made me feel pretty good too.

Think you are reading into this way too much Orlan. I respect and appreciate all who have and are serving now and it is not just on memorial day. I also appreciate the great sacrifices that the families of those soldiers have made, and I typically pray for our soldiers pretty regularly.

The post you are referring to, it was asked what you are planning for the weekend, my wife has to work on Monday, she works in a state veterans home, memorial day there is a kind of big thing.

I am very thankful for the people overseas fighting for our freedom, and also for those who have served in the past and even given their lives! This weekend just happens to be my bachelors party and memorial day....thats the only reason I'm going out and doing anything crazy. Don't dig so deep buddy, we all remember!

All these replies and very few are actually going to a Memorial Day service! That is really sad because if the youngsters aren't being shown about this, soon there will not be anybody going at all!

It is ONE HOLIDAY we should never forget and go to the cemeteries and honor those who gave their lives so we can and could enjoy the freedom we have!

If it were'nt for those who have served, these two little ones would not be here. Never for one minute think that I don't go one day without thinking or thanking all of you. Your sacrifice has given these two girls a life in our great country and a family who thanks God everyday for bringing them to us.

Easy Orlan!!! Yes people are having fun. But I don't think they are doing this without knowing why this day is what it is! ;) Especially on these forums, 99.9999% of the people that posted what they are doing know darn well what this day is all about! So I don't think they posted this to piss off any vet or currently serving military personnel!

Sorry Orlan, but do not think nor can I agree that by not going to a cemetery or a memorial service somewhere that anyone is showing a lack of support or respect or is somehow forgetting. As a kid, my parents never took me to any memorial service or to a cemetery on memorial day, I did however visit Gettysburg as a kid one summer, and have been to Arlington as well. My father served in Vietnam and died in an auto accident a short time after returning home, my step father is a Vietnam vet, now disabled and in rapidly declining health. I have the greatest respect for all our service members past and present and do not need to go to a memorial service or cemetery somewhere to show my respect or remember what they have done.

Well for one I don't have kiddos to take to a memorial service, and I kinda think your outta line telling folks they are wrong for not going to a memorial service. I have some of my best friends over in Iraq fighting right now and miss them terribly and think of them constantly. I also have a family who served in the military. I have never forgotten them, and never will. So who are you to tell me what I'm doing this weekend is sad and terrible? You do your thing, and I'll do mine, but don't try and act like I'm a bad person cause I'm not going to a memorial service. Lighten up eh?
