Well, it seems like just yesterday that I was posting a few pics and telling you all about our lobster season opening ( that was last Nov. 27 )

Today was the last day for another 6 months. We landed 200 traps yesterday and the last 200 today. Everyone's gear has to be out of the ocean by midnight tonight.

The bright side is, no more getting up at 4 am for a while ( but my brain is programed for that time, so I'll be up anyway :o:D )

yea. i'm really curious. how many lobster (keepers) did you get in the last 400 pots? how many lobsters are normal of the pots. is 1 normal, or 3, or ??? do oyou throw back the females, like we do crab in alaska? can you even tell??? get some sleep, then lets see some answers.... lol

I'll try and explain best I can :

When we set to traps out on opening day, they stay on the bottom of the ocean until we land them ( yesterday ). We try and haul them ever day in Dec. ( since the season has been closed for 6 months, that's when you catch the most ). The first haul last fall we had around 3000 lbs. When the ocean temperature drops in Jan. the lobsters don't crawl much, we then only go and haul them a couple times a week ( or when the weather permits ) in Jan., Feb.

We try and haul more in March and then in April & May we try to haul them every day ( again if the weather permits ).

In May, we have been getting anywhere from 300 - 700 lbs each day, depending on how smooth the ocean is at night. When it's rough, the lobsters don't crawl as good.

We have to throw back any lobster that is under 3 1/4 inches ( from it's eye socket to the back of it's body shell ) one that is 3 1/4 inches weighs around 1 lb.

We only have to throw back female lobsters that are carrying eggs on them and yes it's very easy to tell the difference between a male and a female.

Some traps will have none in them, some will have 7 or 8 in the spring time. In Dec., I have seen as many as 32 in one trap.

The biggest one that we caught this spring was a 12 pounder.

Hope this helps :)

never had the camera with me that day, however here is one from a couple years ago. The small one is about a 1 1/2 - 2 pounder, I think the big one weighed 14 pounds :cool:the lobster crate it is sitting on is 32 inches long :) so if you unfold it's tail, he's a big sucker :D
