Spotting scopes

I've use to a spotting scope along in my pack when I hunt out west but to be honest with ya - I just pack a good pair of bino's now. Spotting scopes are great when you have a level spot to set up on and the animal doesn't move much. Plus - if I'm looking at something that 1500 yards away - that just means I've got to hike a 1000 yards before I get into range!!!

Re: Spotting scopes

I use mine regularly. I use them a lot for preseason scouting. It lets me see whats around without getting so close to spook the critter out of the area or making it nocturnal.

I use mine for varmint hunting. I have a window mount so I can sit in my air conditioned mobile ground blind and watch the fields. When I see a groundhog I get out and prep for the shot.

They are also great for range work. When I shoot at longer ranges I don't need to go downrange to see how the groups are. I check them out in the spotter and keep on chugging.

If you get one, don't get a cheap one. If you can't afford a good one, get a better set of binocs instead. The cheap spotters have crappy optics and are typically usless at max magnification. Go to a shop that has some good spotters and compare them side by side. I went with the Cabela's Big Sky Spotting Scope . It is not in the same class as the Zeiss or Swarovski, but I found its much better than the Leupold, Burris, Nikon, etc.
