BearClaw
My hunting/fishing buddy and I went flyfishing today at Savage River in Western Maryland and saw a coyote come up from up the river on the other side. She came up across from us and was acting almost like a dog instead of a coyote! She even tried to swim across but turned back because she didn't lile the water. She showed no signs of agression and acted like she wanted to come to us. She eventually left and we went back fishing. My buddy went upstream and I was standing there fishing when all of a sudden I turned and she was there at my feet trying to snuggle up to me and jump up like a dog. She was fit and healthy and not mangy at all. I gave her my PopTart because I was afraid at first! Turns out all she wanted was to get some attention and get petted. She even chased a stick my buddy threw. She played with my flyline and net and hung around us most of the morning. She even followed us down river and almost acted sad when we crossed back across the river and she couldn't go. Here are some pics.
sureshot
nice pictures!!!! I am kind of astonished, I have hunted coyotes for years and thought I knew it all[or at least most of it] this here really puzzles me makes me think it goes against everything I thought I knew lol!! coloring is off and face looks a bit different[possable just coloring and shading in picture] than our coyotes but different areas they will be different, possable part dog??? interested in what people think!!! thanks for posting
BearClaw
Yeah, possibly part dog mix and raised in a home? Not sure, acts like a dog, looks like a coyote!
buckee
Very unusual behavior. That dark muzzle makes me think it's a cross, and it's behavior makes me think it was raised by someone. Maybe he was looking to get adopted. He sure looks lovable...eh.

ruttinbuc
He has tame in his eyes. At least it looks that way to me. Nice pics... Pretty cool.....
BearClaw
Want to know how tame? Forgot to add this-when we were playing, he put his mouth on my wrist like he was playing but didn't bite down!! (Thankfully!) I certainly didn't encourage that, she just did it!! wtnhunt
Think it is a coydog. We have some around I here, got jumped while turkey hunting by a yote and a dog running together back this spring. Seen some strange behavior in yotes here. Very cool experience and some great pics. BearClaw
The rest of the story...before my buddy came back in sight, I was really puzzled about what was going on with that coyote. I was alittle, well, maybe more than a little but confused because he acted so friendly yet I knew what he was. Would she turn vicious in a second, who knew? So I waded out into the river where I knew she didn't like to go. Not! Here she came doing the 'coyote paddle' but the current took her downstream a little but she got out and came back up to me. Here is a pic of her trying to catch up to me. Here is another pic of my friend and the type of greeting he got when he came back downstream. dfol20
Thats very interesting. It must be a coyote raised in a home. The Coyotes in national parks, that get fed by people all the time, don't even act that tame. Amazing.
Chenango Dave
Its a good thing for cameras , many a people would never believe that story. Thats pretty amazing. Thanks for sharing.
OUTSIDER
When was a kid we got hold of a pup, it was colored almost exactley like that, same looks and everything. When it got bigger it looked almost exactley like a coyote. Well dad went and asked the guy about it, and he said they all turned out like that, So he guesses his sheppard got bread by a coyote. The dog was a good little dog until you turned it loose, it would be gone for 3 - 5 days then it would come home. It would not listen to its name either. Cool pictures!! buckee
It's a shame that poor critter is left out in the wild. It won't survive long.
nokan
My dentist raised a coyote from a pup and it ended up very high strung, skittish and nervous around people. Sure looks like a coyote, maybe a little heavy in the body.....Very interesting............
Canuck2
Wow, really interesting! Like the others have mentioned, I also have never seen coyote behavior like that. Undoubtedly there's a logical reason, like it was raised by someone from a pup.
hammerforged
Great story and pictures, she must be a dog/coyote cross. I agree with buckee, she wont last long with that type of temperament. It's a shame too, she would be a great addition to a well managed wildlife petting zoo. I didn't see any pics of your catch though.
hoosierhunter
That is flat out amazing. It had to be hand raised. I was thinking coy dog as well. But even at that it wouldn't be that friendly unless it was hand raised. Unfortunately he will probably be shot if he keeps doing that........ anyway outstanding story and pictures!!!!!! Stickslinger
If she stays in the area where we saw her she should be ok, there are a few houses around and I would assume that one of those houses is where she was raised. By her actions towards us she had to be raised by people somewhere, I just hope that if someone sees her coming towards them that they don't hit her with a rock or something. I'm still totally amazed by this, we might take another trip down there this weekend to see if she is still around.

Ethan Givan
That doesnt look like any normal coyote I have seen. Too dark, and face isnt long enough. Most likely a coydog. We have some around here. They arent as skittish as normal coyotes. Cool story though.
