dbHunterNY
I was wondering how much my accuracy is decreased with the shaft I got, due to it's spine. I shoot an '07 single cam bow with 60-70 lb limbs, that's probably set around 64 lbs. I use 29" 5575 Expedition Hunter Goldtips with 100 grain points. I believe they have a spine of 0.400" and everything I've looked at says I should be shooting a spine of 0.300"-0.340". So can anyone answer the question of how much is this difference in spine affecting my accuracy from 5-70 yards? Thanks, Dan
GWSmith
By the looks of things your right on for the Spine selection from what you've said your shooting.

dbHunterNY
Thanks for the help and graphic. However, I believe there's now a discrepancy with Goldtips charts. If I go to the Goldtip website and look at the sizing chart, it says that I should be shooting 7595s (spine of 0.340") not 5575s (which I have, with a spine of 0.400"). Maybe this is a newer chart that has been updated based on up to date performance data than the one you posted?? I've gone to other brand websites and they say I should be shooting an arrow with a spine of 0.340". I've been told you want to be slightly too stiff opposed to slightly too weak. Maybe I'll have to email or call Tim Gillingham. Again thanks for posting the chart. - Dan
GWSmith
Dan, Is this the arrow spine chart your refferring to? http://www.huntersfriend.com/arrowhelp/gold-tip-arrow-spine-chart.htm If so what you've said your shooting still has you into a 5575 shaft. m gardner
The single cam bows also need a slightly stiffer arrow. Arrow balance will affect and accuracy too. Gold Tip has a calculator for that too. Or they used to. It's a calculation to determine how far forward the balance point of the arrow is. I use the 5575's @ 29.5, with AAE Max Hunter fletching, and 100 grain tips from my PSE Mossy Oak NX set @ 59 pounds and they are very accurate. This is the chart I'm referring to.... http://www.goldtip.com/downloads/2006sizing-chart.pdf I emailed Tim Gillingham at Goldtip. We'll see if he gets back to me. However, I may turn the bow down as much as I can go to help things, live with it, and use up the 5575 arrows I have. Again, thanks for the info guys. - Dan

If it makes a difference experiment until you find the sweet spot. IMHO, too many folks just crank their poundage to maximum and never mess with that adjustment again. I've been guilty of it myself. I admit it. The charts are just guides NOT the law. Sometimes a setup which seems to be a perfect fit for a chart recommendation simply isn't. m gardner
I've got two supposedly identical bows and the sweet spot is different for each. I shoot PSE Radial weave Predators out of one and Gold Tips out of the other. Take measurements of tiller, brace height, axle to axle, draw weight, etc. etc so you can keep it in tune and duplicate the tune when you change strings. The arrows are a big part of it but the bow tuning and the nut behind it are factors too. The one that shoots the Gold Tips won money this year and shot a 1.33 inch group at 40 yards. Not a target bow either. Came in 19th. m gardner
The bow tune has lots to do with arrow flight. When you find that sweet spot record all the measurements like tiller, brace height axle to axle measurements, etc. etc. so you can keep it in tune and retune when you change strings. Different brands of strings help too. Here's what happens when you hit that sweet spot. Two ruined Gold Tips in 14 targets. One at 25 and one at 40 yards. Thanks, Dan I have a Mathews S2 set at 62 # shooting 28" arrows off a Drop Zone rest.According to the charts I should shoot a Gold Tip 5575. It won't paper tune with that arrow. I keep getting a tail left paper tear. I'm having to move up to the 7595 to get it to tune. Without it being in tune it will affect my accuracy. If your bow will tune correctly with the 5575 it shouldn't affect the accuracy.
dbHunterNY
So Tim Gillingham emailed me back. I'm going to test some things and see if I can have my bow paper tuned at 5/15/30 ft I'll stick with the 5575's (0.400" spine) otherwise I'll bump up to the 7595's (0.340" spine). This would probably be better in the long run with me shooting broadheads and hunting, it'll be a little more forgiving and will get better penetration. Thanks and happy shooting, Dan
