Hunting the wind

During the rut ithe deer really don't care about the wind. It may make them move a little slower because of the things that might spook them, but they will still move. I did not go last night, but that was because it was 30+ mph and all my stands are pretty high up. In another week, i would have been out there no matter what. Weather looks pretty good here in KC for the rest of the week.

The wind has been high here in SoIL too. When the wind is strong I try to hunt area that are sheilded partially from the wind. We have alot of rolling hills and you will find little hollows and gullies that are sheilded. In the rut...this places are likely to provide a better spot for does...and the bucks will follow. Last year I watched two does for about 2 hours in a little area I call fern gully. It is a deep cut out between two high ridges. One small buck came in but no bruisers that day. However, think about this...would you pass up getting laid b/c the wind was blowing hard? Did'nt think so.

I always hunt in 15-25 mph winds. It makes it easier to decide which stand to hunt. Go to a low area (valley or draw). Hunt the edge of a field that is sheltered by large trees.

I do avoid longer shots in winds above 25 mph and I make sure the tree is big enough to prevent too much swaying.

I had one of the biggest bucks I've seen from a treestand chase a doe by my stand in 30 mph winds.

When the rut is on deer ARE moving.

The thing you have to factor in is safety and ethical shots. I wouldn't take a 40 yrd shot with 40 mph winds if I was bowhunting.
