i went on one of my special draw in hunts today and my brother shot an 8 point. he says he thinks he shot him in his hind quarter but not for sure. Things happen sometimes i guess but we tracked him about 500 yard into a swamp the blood was small drops at a time. What are the chances the the deer is still alive and if hes dead how far will a deer run if hes it in the hind quarter? and just to add i only seen one doe today about 70 yards out, but will be back on monday.

There is a main artery that runs through the hind quarter; if you hit it you would know. I shot a doe one time and my arrow hit a branch that I didn't see. My arrow hit her right in the back leg. It made me sick watching her run off with an arrow sticking out of her leg. She ran about 40 yards and tipped over; I couldn't believe it. If he hit it in the back leg and it went 500 yards you probably won't find it. However you owe it to the deer to keep looking, don't give up until your absolutely sure that you won't find it. Especially if he is not positive this is where he hit it. Good Luck

There's a good chance he'll survive the shot, depending on the angle of incidence. If you hit an artery, you wouldn't be able to see anything but blood spurting out, so he definitely missed that. He's in pain, but I think he might still be alive. You still might want to look a little bit more. If he is dead, I've seen stranger things happen...

I highly doubt he will live if you passed through him. I would say if it hit bone and didn't penetrate maybe, must post times if you pass though, it might not kill the deer right there, but he will die from infection or something like , if you passed through the body(lower leg then yes he would probably live),that usually several days or weeks later. Sometimes they make it, but usually not:rolleyes: Gl finding him...
