carbonhunter
Going back through my hunting journal i keep at my house i put together some numbers We had a huge storm here over christmas that caused power to go out for 7 days. I was bird hunting in Iowa for most of it so didnt have many problems. On the other hand my deep freezer did I lost almost all my meat. At the time it made me sick but i just threw it out and tried not to count. Went to try and find some tenderloins the other day and couldnt find any so i decided to finnaly find out what the damage was, after looking threw the journal i find that i threw out 10 of the 12 deer (still have one in for sausage) Kill permit before anyone gets there panties in a bunch 25 ducks 22 pheasents 30somthing quail and almost 50 doves That makes me really sick, I would never shoot anygame if i didnt plan on eating it, just personal reasons. I feel like i left all this to waste and it really bugs me. I dont want to guess but that has to be almost a 1000 pounds of wild game that dosnt count the odd trout/walleye/salmon and what not i had in there plus all of our garden vegies that mother had frozen. Does anyone now of a way of preventing this in the future?? I guess it could have been left outside as it was super cold the whole time. but that wont work in a normal year. OJR
Re: I\'m gonna be sick Over Christmas of '97 we had a lot of snow and sleet. We were without power for 5 days. Lucky for me, a friend of mine has a restuarant and had all sorts of room in his walk-in freezer. I took everything down to his place and didn't have any problems. Lost a little in the frig but that was all! Sorry to hear about that!

Tominator
Re: I\'m gonna be sick Act of God Aaron. Not much you can do about it. Sounds like you're feeling guilty about the loss. There was nothing you could do IMHO. The only solution that I can think of would be to get one of those whole house generators that provide electricity when the power goes out. The wife and I are thinking about adding one when we put our addition on. It's a type of insurance policy I guess. We had the same thing happen to us a few years ago when we were at my father in law's, lost a fair amount of meat and the basement flooded because the sump pump died when the power did come back on. That was insult to injury. I guess you could also get a battery back up for your freezer.
DSGB
Re: I\'m gonna be sick [ QUOTE ] I guess you could also get a battery back up for your freezer. [/ QUOTE ] That, or a generator, is probably the only way to prevent that type of thing. Sorry about your meat.
wtnhunt
Re: I\'m gonna be sick Lowes and some other places have the emergency automatic backup generators just for that type thing. They are a bit pricey, but we have seriously considered getting one here. A normal mid size generator would keep the freezer cycled and we have had to use ours to run the freezers and refrigerators when our power has been out several times, but sure would be nice to have one that would run everything and kick on automatically. firefighter
Re: I\'m gonna be sick sometimes if we get ice storms and we loose power for a long time,,, i've seen people use a generator and run a power cord to there freezer and fridge through a window while there home, then when they leave to go to work , put everything away and if the power is still out when they get home just hook everything back up again, just remember not to open the freezer unless u need something out of it......... dogdoc
Re: I\'m gonna be sick We lost power after an ice storm a few years back--funny thing--the neighbors across the street had power. I ran an extension cord to their house and kept the freezer plugged in so I didn't loose any meat. That is heartbreaking. todd
Turkeygirl
Re: I\'m gonna be sick Wow, that is really sad to hear. I have never experienced anything like that but I can sense what you feel. I don't think you can really be prepared for such a thing. The Amish here have Ice Houses though that they keep stuff in, even in the summer if that is a suggestion, lol
