And there haven't been any shot there for at least ten years. No longbeards showed but we had eight of these within range opening day Sunday afternoon. I think it's safe to say. They like this decoy. Leo Posted March 17, 2009 Author Report Share Posted March 17, 2009 (edited) I used the Canon Powershot S3 IS with the telephoto adapter for that picture. I think it makes a great desktop photo myself! Next year those will be solid two year old mature toms. I've been passing on jakes on this farm myself personally since spring of 2001. Some of the two to six year old birds I've taken there have had to been in front of me before. It's really a small farm to turkey hunt, roughly 200acres. We go to extreme stealth measures to make the birds feel like they are not being hunted there. Get in place at least 30 minutes before first gobble and no closer than 200 yards from the roost area. We've found high pressure tactics will cause them to change their pattern too much and it's quite easy to push them off the farm completely. Using this low pressure subtle approach we often have three or four gobblers working us a hunt. Sometimes they are all jakes. Sometimes not. This is what happened opening day on the same farm last year. They like my handpainted Jake too! At this point I wasn't even finished the wings but they didn't seem to mind. My idea was to try and match the local colors of our birds as best I could. I think the head, neck and body to the wing line match very nicely. I used my own photos for color reference reference. This seems to have really increased the effectiveness of this decoy. I will try to post a picture of the completed decoy in the future.
