I will have well over 400 plants so its not something im willing to water by hand. Im going to setup an irrigation system using a pump and actuated valves, as well as a sprinkler controller. Here are the details. Im using and old hand dug well with about 12' of lift to surface. I then have to trench roughly 120' to where I will have a manifold setup with actuated valves. From there the water will carry no further than another 120' where it connects to rows and travels a max length of 175'. So total carry not including the lift is roughly 415'. I dont need a lot of pressure as I am only doing .5gpm drip line (holes at 18" o.c.). I can do my hillbilly math and work it out but its all based off of the guessing game. Also, with this type of pump do I need a foot valve and pressure tank? Im not sure how these work but plan on running the 110v (115v) side as I have the power to do so just a few feet away. Chime in people.... Im lost! Oh, and thanks in advance. jm23494 Posted September 2, 2009 Report Share Posted September 2, 2009 (edited) A few questions before we can say whether the pump will work or not: What size pipe are you planning on using for each of the runs that you talked about? What pipe material will you be using? What's the total gpm that you are looking at flowing? From there I can run a quick calc here at work and let you know if the pump will be able to do what you want it to do, or let you know what you will need. bfletch7441 Posted September 2, 2009 Report Share Posted September 2, 2009 I'm sure you'll have to generate more than 12 ft of head at some time as you pull water from the well, so what kind of flow does your well have, and what will be the max amount of head you have to pull? That pump delivers a good bit of flow, even at 30 ft of head. If you're doing drip, and no sprinkling, you'll need a pressure reducer so you actually have drips instead of sprays! I was on the fence between dripping line and a dripper nozzle but no longer. The dripper seems to be a better deal. They operate at 10-20 psi, and 0 - 10gpm. Im planning on running them at roughly 2gpm, 30 minutes at a time (1 gallon per plant). I plan on running 3/4" pvc from the pump to the valves (app 120'). I will then switch to 1/2" poly from the valves to the rows (no more than 125') and down the length of the row (175'). It then has to be reduced to 1/4" Poly for about 6". The well right now is a 24" - 30" (roughly) gaping hole in the ground. It is a 100+ year old well. Our water table is insane. My primary well is only about 30' deep from what ive been told.
