nykole Posted September 8, 2009 Report Share Posted September 8, 2009 This is my first year hunting with a compound bow (or any form of archery for that matter). I have a release that I am using now, and I am shooting very well, but I have a weak wrist and drawing the bow is making my joint very sore. Is there a release (left handed btw) that will give my wrist more support to keep it from over extending or over stretching like it does? Thanks in advance to any help any of you might have! It strapped around his elbow. Could it just be a problem with the particular model of release that you're using? Have you tried any others? About the only other suggestion I can think of is to find some wrist strengthening exercises and see if those help. Maybe one of our archery gurus has some ideas? I messed around with another release tonight- one without a wrist strap. Did not like that one at all. I have figured out that it helps a little to pull the release back further on my arm- after the wrist instead of between the wrist and the hand. But then I still run into the problem when I draw back- it pulls it forward a little. I will just keep trying with whatever we can think of. Thanks for you help! MCH Posted September 9, 2009 Report Share Posted September 9, 2009 Another option is to reduce the draw weight that you're pulling. I know I've got back problems that will show up if I continuously pull back 65+ lbs. According to the docs, I've got a lot of scar tissue on my back(fibrosis, I believe) and it really flares up. For some reason, though, if I lower the draw weight to around 60, its not that bad on me. I know of a lot of archers that shoot in the 50's very effectively. Might give it a try. mikewink Posted September 9, 2009 Report Share Posted September 9, 2009 The other thing you could do, is to get a weight lifting glove with a velcro wrist support then put your release on above that. It will keep the release behind the wrist, and the fingers are already cut so you will still have the sensativity of your finger tips. I used to shoot one, in fact I think I have it in my drawer at work. I'm leaving tomorrow for colorado and will be gone through the 20th but if it's something you want to try send me a pm with your address and I'll send it out to you, it's been used but it still works. I have looked into all these things that I have read on here. The physically challenged site- I didn't really see anything on that will still actually allow me to draw and release my own bow, but if it comes down to me not being able to anymore at all- they have some things that are really cool. The weight glove thing I will definately try- it's a really good idea. My husband actually suggested yesterday that I should try the Winn release. That may be a good option to try... I don't really want to turn my bow down just yet... See the sad thing is- I have only been shooting for about 3 weeks and i'm only drawing 42 pounds. I have progressed there from the 30 my brother set it at 3 weeks ago. I'm afraid if I turn it down, my arrows won't have the speed they need to make a clean kill... that I guess will be the last resort. :bummed: I am definately going to start a very mild workout to strengthen my wrists, elbows, and shoulders.
