Slash Posted September 10, 2009 Report Share Posted September 10, 2009 I went with martin the other day to check his bear traps out around the corn fields, i didn't know what to expect, I didn't even know what the traps looked like! We came to a spot where a bear had been terrorizing the corn and doing a lot of damage, since there was no trap there we went and grabbed one that was empty and brought it over (simply drug it over with the 4-wheeler). With that one set up and ready for a curious bear to stick his nose where he shouldn't, we headed off to check trap #2. I now knew what the traps looked like and when we came up on that second one, and the trap door was down, my heart started racing. Martin raced up to it with the wheeler, and I timidly, yet anxiously worked my way up on my wheeler. Martin announced it was a black bear probably about 200# and I got even more excited, you see I've never been this close to a bear and I was like a lil boy in a toy store to see this one SO close. I leaned in to the door, which is like a big gate and the bear lunged at the door, I nearly peed myself and fell backwards on my butt :clown: This was one of the coolest things I'd seen in a long time and I laughed. Martin hooked up to the trap the same way he had hooked up to the empty one and I looked at him with an awkward smile.....the trap/bear needed to be brought as close to the road as possible while still out of sight so the DNR could come get it, so I followed behind Martin and the thrashing bear as it was given the ride of a lifetime. From what I could see from behind, the bear was angry because of the rocks being thrown at him and the exhaust blowing right in his face. HAHA he deserved it. I thought to myself while laughing out loud (literally) *next best thing to shootin him* We came to a stop and martin unhooked the trap and dialed the DNR agent on his cellular telephone to arrange a pickup, agent said he'd be there to get it and drop a new one.....perfect. So we left the bear there in the trap, furious, and went on to check trap #3. but before we headed out, I heard Martin say something that made me chuckle...... "last time you'll mess with my garden" haha stupid bear :hammer1: Since then it's been reported that 10 bears have been caught for the DNR to relocate from Martin's property. Good riddance. Ravin R10 man Posted September 11, 2009 Report Share Posted September 11, 2009 The key is to trap and move them out as soon as they start doing damage in the corn...hopefully they will get onto a bait station a bear hunter has set up...some do make it back..even though they are released some 40 miles away..some of the bears were 250 to 300 # range..most lately have been under 200# plus two coons that didnt get far when released, they were skun out for the pelt. We have 6 traps out right now on 150 acres of corn, which takes about an hour to check on the 4 wheeler Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Took the camera with this time too It's a little distorted but if you look closely you can see that is the inside of the bear's mouth. I guess he didn't like the camera. Something we're not used to down here, although I did get some cool pics of a bear here 2 years ago just behind my house, but that's very rare in these parts. I hope to take one with a bow one day.
