cdelawde Posted October 5, 2009 Report Share Posted October 5, 2009 My granddaughter has been going turkey hunting with me and my husband since she was 3. She loves the outdoors and this year is her first year of being able to actually hunt with us (she is now 9). Turkey season wasn't the best this year and she did not get a bird. This weekend was her first time in the woods for deer season. She is not strong enough to pull the bow back to meet the regulations, but is very good with a crossbow. Her first evening out we were in a blind and about one hour into the hunt we heard something coming up from the right. She got ready and then a young deer come right in front of the blind, not a 10 year shot. I believe I could hear her heartbeat and she was a little shaky. She said that she had it in locked in, but I did not allow her to shoot. This was a young deer (last years) and we do not take them that young. We watched as the deer left, and instead of being upset, she looked at me and said "I love you Grandma". I looked at her and said what made you say that right now and she said, I have never felt the way i just did when that deer came out and i had the shot. That was amazing she said, thanks for hunting with me. It was that moment when I realized how much we can give a kid if we just take the time. The other kids in her school do not realize why she loves to hunt and camp, but giving a chance I believe they would fall in love with it also.
