mike13candace Posted November 2, 2009 Report Share Posted November 2, 2009 The trip started out rough on Thursday. Flight was delayed for hours, then cancelled. Had me on a possible flight at 9:38 pm. (8-hours after schedule 1st flight) I rented a car from Chicago o-hare, drove four hours to Springfield Ill. Picked up second rental car and drove another 1 1/2 hours. Arrived at camp around 11ish.. talk about jet/car lag.. Now the trip.. Saw plenty of doe and young bucks from spikes to 8-pointers. Had three shooters outside of bow range. One large 10-pointer at 100 yards.. tried to rattle him in, along come two young 6-pointers. Large 12-pointer 180 inch model at 60 yards.. hooked on a doe at dawn. The second to last morning a large 10-pointer with 4-ladies.. to dark to shoot. Weather played a little part in my hunt. Rained four out of the eight days. I hunted eight to nine hours every day except Thurday afternoon.. rained 2"..yuk. Corn is still up standing. The deer are using it for cover. This means they don't have to use the timberline i'm posted in... darn The highlight of my trip was a doe who bedded not once but twice under my stand. Enclosed is a picture. I used her ears for locating deer. She would focus one direction and next a deer would arrive.. I couldn't drink or eat anything for 2-hours. She did allow me this picture... I had the same thing happen to me a few times out there. Weather plays a much bigger part than you realize. The corn not cut because of the weather is hurting a lot of states this year. As for the transportation you may have been better to take your truck. That 8 hour wait would have got you halfway there. buckee Posted November 2, 2009 Report Share Posted November 2, 2009 Sounds like you saw some great action. It's a shame nothing was within range. That standing corn can really mess things up, I know. A 180 is a definte bonus to see even though you didnt kill him ...people will go thier whole hunting career without seeing a world class animal like that. GWSmith Posted November 2, 2009 Report Share Posted November 2, 2009 Thanks for posting that picture...it seems that your FRS-"Female Radar Station" looks just like the ones around here...LOL It's amazing how well they pick up sounds and swivel their ears in that direction. Wish you would have had the chance to close the deal on one of the big ones you saw! Heck around here we have seen next to nothing for deer movement even in those fields you drive by where you always see something but are not allowed to hunt!
