I have always thought that the smaller/younger bucks start chasing before the does come into heat and the Big/older bucks will wait untill the does are just about ready to start chasing. So from that thinking I came up with the statement that, Smaller/younger bucks go into rut earlier than the bigger/older bucks. Does that sound right to everyone else? Was just wondering because last weekend I seen 24 deer and 9 different bucks chasing or searching, all of them 1 1/2 yr olds. Was thinking this weekend might be better for bigger/older bucks. Dawg Posted November 18, 2009 Report Share Posted November 18, 2009 I was taught to think of the rut like this: The younger bucks are like teen age boys, they'll start chasing the does at the first wiff they get. Yeah, I agree. I think all the bucks are ready at pretty much the same time, it's just that (like Steve says) the big bucks just know what's up. I've noticed that when you see little nubbers (this years male fawns) hanging out by themselves without Mom around, then the major Estrus period is only days away. The number of stray fawns has been steadily climbing here for the last week-1/2 or so. I think or actual rut started last Saturday, when it froze all Friday night. Last weekend I did see one lonely button buck by himself and another fawn by herself but also seen a doe with little fawn trailing her.
