Even though I did not fill a tag during oppening weekend of shotgun season in Illinois; I still got to witness a first!! I have been taking a 13 yr old boy bow and gun hunting this season. He lives next to the farm I hunt and the land owner gave him permission to hunt there as well. Anytime the young ones want to hunt I think its great so when he asked me to show him the ropes of the property I was happy too. Well a week ago he shot a doe in the rain and we could not find it as she ran into a large standing corn field. He was bummed but I told him it happens to the best of us. Gun season started last friday and his school is out on oppening day cause the super intendent is a hunter.(lucky kids) His dad drives a semi for a local company and was not going to be able to take him. So i took that friday off and took him with me. He is a good kid and darn good shot. In the morning we set up at the farm close to his house. He did not see much. I saw a few small bucks and a fawn. After the morning hunt I told him we need to walk a patch of timber where I have killed a good buck and couple of does in the past. No body hunts it at all and the deer use it as travel way to bigger timber for cover. He stayed on the high side and I walked the low side with the wind in our face. I jumped a small spike and then heard a deer blow. When I looke up the field there was a good buck coming out of the creek and going away from me. I called Johnathan on the phone and said Im going after this buck meet me accross the road. I get acrross the road and see the buck about 150 or so yds away just walking thru the corn. I pull the gun up to get a better look thru the scope and I hear "boom"!! At first I thought some one was tresspassing and shot the buck I was after but I got a call a second later from Johnathan. "I just shot a big one" in broaken words and deep breath as you could tell he was excited!!! I told him to wait and I would be right there. He was super excited, as was I for him!! He showed me where he shot the buck and the first blood. We followed the blood across the road and over the fence and there he was!!! This was Johnathan's first deer and first buck ever with any weapon; so needless to say he was elated! There was alot of high fives to go around and alot of phone calls as well!! The buck is a nine with good width. This was just as good as if I would have killed a buck as well. Cant wait till my daughter(next year) and my son can expierience this with me!! Get them kids out hunting cause they have to keep this great tradition going!!
