preacherman
I am in the market for a new computer for my church office. Up until now, I have always used a desktop computer. Was wondering, if you had the choice between the two, would you stay with a desktop or would you go with a laptop?
Jeramie
Ive learned to LOVE my laptop. Ive been running one for about 10-12 years now. Its the only way I would go personally. They are just as fast, have just as much storage, etc. as a desktop. However, you can take them with you on long trips and use WIFI when needed, they are great as a portable DVD player, etc. You can even buy a cable and use your tv as a monitor to watch videos, flip through the web, etc. My next setup will have the docking station with a 19+ monitor mounted on the wall and I will have the best of both worlds. However, I cant complain about a 17" toshiba. Its been a good computer.
redkneck
Can't beat the portability of a laptop. However if you think you won't be moving it around much, you can't match the price of a desktop when compared to the laptop. Plus replacement parts for desktops are cheaper, more plentiful, and easy to put in as compared to a laptop. I'd also speculate laptops are stolen 5 to 1 versus desktops. c_lou
Laptop all the way. Like Jeramie said they are just as fast. Most can't compete with the storage of a desktop, but that's what portable HD's are for. I have a 500g external HD that I can just plug in and take with me. Texan_Til_I_Die
Do an honest assessment and determine whether or not you will actually take the laptop out of the office. If not, go with a desktop. If space is a problem, you might consider an all-in-one unit. Those are basically flat panel monitors with everything built into them. backwoods07
In general, desktops have the potential for better performance. Like Texan said, think if you would ever need to bring the computer out of the office. If not, the desktop is the way to go.
OUTSIDER
Depends on what you will actually be using the computer for...Here's an example...I work for an engineering company as a designer, our workstation computers usually run about 4,000 dollars, that is a dell desktop with 2-20"+ moniters. That said, a laptop that has simlar memory, ram, video card, processor, etc, costs near 7,000 dollars!!! You can get much more computer for less if you go with a desktop, but if you are primarily doing word processing and realtree searching, a laptop will be just fine. brad dryden
If you plan on taking it out of the office then use a labtop other then that use the desktop desktops are ALOT cheaper to fix and have ALOT of upgrades you can buy for them the laptops you are very limited on what you can upgrade and they are alot more expensive to fix. Im sicking with the desktop.
stevebeilgard
stationary at the church, desktop. all else, laptop.
TreeStandBowHunter
To me, laptop is the way to go. You can always connect a mouse or even a keyboard if you really want to. I travel a lot so the laptop is the best set-up for me. JMHO...

TBow
Preacherman, Sounds kind'a unanimous from other posters. If you need to be mobile, then laptop. If stationary, then desktop. The call is yours for sure. And the desktops are most assuredly less expensive. Here's something else that I had to consider when opting for which system. I'm getting older and my eyes aren't what they used to be. A few years ago I had to make my first ever trip to the optomotrist. At work, my desktop monitor was approximately 24" from my eyes. I basically only need glasses to read and work/play on the computer. Therefore when I selected what lenses I needed for my glasses, they are set to focus at 24". If I was to use a laptop, I'd likely need another set of reading glasses that would focus closer as you tend to keep a laptop in close to type on. The desktop can allow you to set the monitor at the distance you want. Oh sure you can buy another monitor for a laptop too to do the same thing, but that's all an extra cost too. Plus in my personal opinion, a monitor further away from your eyes just seems to make more sense in regards to good eye health. Just my $0.02. preacherman
Thanks for the input! Now time to make a decision. Checking dell.com out, they have something called "Days of Deals" or something like that. Haven't really plunged into looking hard; but am about to start. Have to do something before the end of the year.
AaronS
Thanks for the input! Now time to make a decision. Checking dell.com out, they have something called "Days of Deals" or something like that. Haven't really plunged into looking hard; but am about to start. Have to do something before the end of the year. I'm currently fixing a Dell Vostro 1700 that I really like the looks of. You can stick plenty of RAM in it, and it a blank port to add a second hard drive if you so desire. From the search I did, they seemed reasonably priced as well. It's big for a laptop (17" monitor), so that could be good or bad depending on your preferences.
BowTech292
Laptop all the way, have had quite a few desktops, got a laptop now, prolly won't ever have another desktop.
devildog
I have to deal with both just about everyday for work. I like both but the desktops are easier to work on and upgrade. If the laptop goes down you have to find someone who works on them or send them in for repair and take the risk of having all of your data lost. If you don't plan on taking with you just go with the desktop.
