DocMort
Hello all, so looking for some more advice. I am looking at getting a new GPS, and was wondering what you all have used out west with good results. It has to have color screen, preferably AA batteries, topo maps. Thank you
joeaveragehunter
upgraded garmin etrex has downloadable topo, roads, and all the way point stuff. It did everything and more for two trips to oregon...one in black timber. Another thing is its reasonably priced (under $200) and light weight enough to carry in a hip pack. LifeNRA
Garmin GPSMAP 60 CSx, I had an eTrex Vista but the 60 CSx is the best. I use it in the car, truck, boat, and in the woods! Very good signal under heavy tree cover too!
johnf
I really like my Garmin. I've got this one https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=145&pID=8707 and have downloaded topo maps off the net that are better than the garmin maps. The only downside to this model is the limited memory. It will only hold about 1/4 of the state on the topo maps. A buddy of mine has this one. https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=145&pID=8701 He has a 4gb micro SD card in it and has topo and road maps for about 1/2 the country and it's not even close to being full. All the newer Garmins have great receivers, even the cheapy one.
Shaun_300
I have a Magellan Triton 400, it's pretty good, but I think if I had to do it again I'll get a Garmin next time, a little easier to use and battery life seems to be a lot better. oddhntr
i would go with the etrex Legend HCx for the money. If you can afford an Oregon - go for it - just beware it won't get as good of reception in thick timber or in the mountains
