Newarcher
A few counties away from me a U.S. Forest Service ranger was shot between the eyes (while standing in the middle of an open field) Friday by a coyote hunter with a night vision scope. 37 years old and gone. There is apparently much more yet to come out in the media that sheds doubt on whether this was truly an accidental shooting on the part of the 'hunter'. ID your targets, take a few seconds and check the surroundings. Make sure it isn't a hunter carrying a mount in a backpack before you shoot someone. Jeez. redkneck
Unreal, and very sad. I hope they get to the bottom of it. Was the hunter legally hunting? I agree with being sure of your target, but also would imagine a night vision scope could leave a lot to be desired as far as making 100% of your target. Really a tragic story
camoman1
Thats a sad story for sure....sure are some answers to find there.. The rules of firearm safety can NEVER be strayed from thats for sure. Was the ranger coming over to inspect the 'hunter'...?? seems strange he would be in the middle of an open field at night otherwise....could be a lot more to that story than the 'accident'' thing for sure. Best wishes to the rangers family.

buckee
What a crying shame. I just don't understand how someone can be so careless. Here's a link to the story. http://www.13wmaz.com/news/local/story.aspx?storyid=75897&catid=175A Edited March 8, 2010 by buckee
camoman1
After reading the article, it looks like it may have been an accident after all..a very avoidable one though. Thanks for posting that Steve.

dartonman
So sad.....it may turn out they were poaching deer....as how do you even look for the "glare" of the eyes on a 5'10 man as a coyote....seems extremely odd to me....and so sad...I teach Hunter Safety, and we cannot stress enough to identify your target, and whats beyond.........al
Newarcher
After reading the article, it looks like it may have been an accident after all..a very avoidable one though. Thanks for posting that Steve. I can't say what and why but there's information that has been omitted from the article that would indicate there is more to the story. Much has been left out for LE reasons. Unfortunately, there are only three people involved and the one most likely to tell the truth is dead. wtnhunt
No accident there, the person knowingly pulled the trigger on a target he did not identify. That is plain carelessness and disregard for what is on the opposite end of your firearm, goes totally against what is taught in hunter safety. Kinda sounds like they may have been shining and saw eyes and shot, how else could they mistakenly shoot between the eyes. Very very sad. Wobbly_Alaska
very sad.... but do human eye's shine? dogs and deer do quite well... but many ungulates also do not... so i guess thats the question... if human eyes do not shine how can you mistake them???? anybody?? The_Kat
They got caught poaching and decided to take a shot at the ranger before he could turn them in or issue a citation. Between the eyes is no accident. I hope the SOB's rot in jail. I get so tired of "excuses" in this accidental shootings. Heck if ya wanna murder someone, just take them hunting and shoot em. It was an accident officer, I swear.

wtnhunt
Human eyes will shine in night vision scopes. Think Kyle is right here. Never looked with a scope on a gun, but I know humans eyes do shine with IR or night vision equipped cameras.
redkneck
They got caught poaching and decided to take a shot at the ranger before he could turn them in or issue a citation. I'd hope it was accidental, and since they called 911 to report it instead of running it prob was. But the fact remains the guy did not identify his target and pulled the trigger, the one thing we're all taught, or should have been anyway. redkneck
Heck if ya wanna murder someone, just take them hunting and shoot em. I've thought the same thing Kyle for years. Seems to be the one thing you can do to someone where stupidity is the perfect defense and you get to walk out of court. Heck you'll do more time if you shoot their dog and claim it was an accident than if you shoot a person.
The_Kat
I'd hope it was accidental, and since they called 911 to report it instead of running it prob was. Well ya call 911 to make it seem an accident. Gotta cover your tracks the best you can.
Slash
Well ya call 911 to make it seem an accident. Gotta cover your tracks the best you can. Gotta give em the benefit of the doubt though, innocent til proven guilty on the intentional theory. Still absolutely wrong on all levels and gives hunters a bad name. The_Kat
Between the eyes kinda kills the innocent theory to me. If the guy is short he at least 4 foot plus. Find me a 4 foot coyote out there.... I agree with the deer poaching theory. Thats the only way I buy that it was accidental.
redkneck
I could maybe think of a guy walking across a field that dropped off so from the shooter's line of sight his head appeared at ground level, but still he needed to look for the body outline to shoot.
