Dawg
So this is my wifes car..........she's a beaut, eh? So anyways, my wife swears that there are times when she takes off from 1st gear (standard), she feels "lag" in the power. She discribes it as it not taking off like it should. I'm clueless when it comes to mechs, so what could cause this "lag" in power? It only does it every once in awhile. Sometimes it's from 1st to 2nd, other times it's from 2nd to 3rd. Shaun_300
Does the engine seem to lag? Or does it just not take off when you let off the clutch? (Engine running fine, car not taking off as it should) No check engine light eh? If the engine seems to be running fine the clutch might be starting to slip a bit when it gets hot. If it's the engine at fault it could be a camshaft position sensor, throttle position sensor, maybe mass air flow sensor. If it can do it frequently enough that a dealer may be able to get it to act up with a scanner attached, it may be the best way to go. Dawg
By the way she describes it, (and I haven't had it happen to me but I don't drive the car as much as she does), it takes the engine a second or two to take off, not really stalling, just a quick lag. She said the other day she floored it and it took a sec for it to "get up and go". The engine runs fine, no clanks or clatters.
Shaun_300
Sounds like an electrical problem to me then, probably one of those sensors I mentioned.
Dawg
Can the mechanic tell by hooking it up to a computer if its a sensor or does it have to actually "lag" while it's hooked up in order for them to tell?
toddyboman
Correct me if I am wrong here Shaun......but I think if a error appears in the computer of the car...The car keeps that error code. So when the mechanic hooks the scanner up to the car they can see the error code.
Shaun_300
It all depends on the code whether it'll throw the check engine light on. If it's a minor fault it'll flag a code but not put the check engine light on. Sometimes there's electrical faults that don't throw a code though. All depends. If there's no code we have to drive it with the scanner and watch all the parameters, when it lags, we have to find the problem through the parameters. redkneck
How many miles you got on it Corey? Could be one of those situations where if you are due plugs/wires you could go ahead and put some on anyway. Most any autozone/advance auto will scan you codes to tell you if anything is pending, but I'd start with the basic tune up if it's past due. btw... that is a sharp car. Dawg
It's got a touch over 120k miles on it. BTW Shaun, the check engine light is not on. Prolly will start by taking it somewhere and have it hooked up, if that doesn't produce anything I will do as John suggested and do a tune up. Thanks guys! redkneck
If you've never put plugs and wires on it, I would start with that (you need them anyway) then see if you still have the lag sometimes.
Goinghuntin
If it's the engine at fault it could be a camshaft position sensor I thought the camshaft position sensor just kinda fine-tuned engine performance, no? And also ran the tach too? Camshaft sensor went out on my Dad's Blazer little while ago, didn't really affect the engine at all, just lost the tach. Shaun_300
Holy smokes, didn't realize there were that many miles on it! Yeah definitely do a tune up on it, plugs, wires, fuel filter, air filter. Unless the place you take it to can find something obvious wrong. I will try with the tune up. Thanks a ton guys!!
wildthing
like a few others have mentioned, a tune up is definitely an economical starting point. Also...you can take the car to a Valvoline type shop and have them run a fuel systems cleaner through...you might have some built up crap in the fuel system, fuel injectors etc.
