Randy
My kids need some new baseball and soccer fields. The baseball fields are basically in a marsh and are always wet. The soccer fields we have are on this schools property and will be lost when/if it sells. Thanks a ton!!! WAUPUN — When Jefferson Elementary closed people worried not only about the fate of the school, but the fate of the six soccer and three baseball and softball fields that are part of the property. The property went up for sale, and this spring an offer was made but fell through. Now Kevin Homan, president of the Youth Soccer Association in Waupun has stumbled upon a way they can buy Jefferson School, tear it down and add three more ball diamonds. The scheme would make the 15 acres bordered by Lincoln and Beaver Dam streets, Rens Way and Grand View Avenue, a sports complex. “I was Watching Good Morning America two months ago and they did a story about Pepsi offering grant money for improving the cities,” said Homan. The grants were given not based on the decision of a committee, but based upon the number of people voting for it. Homan went to the website and filled out a request for a grant to improve the soccer fields, purchase Jefferson School, tear it down and construct three little league fields, and put in a concession stand. His was one of 500 applications accepted for two, $250,000 grants. The way it works, people vote for the grant, and that’s where those interested in having the Youth Soccer Association purchasing the property and expanding it can help. “There are two ways to vote,” said Homan. One way Homan said is to go to RefreshEverything.com then to Vote America then click on the $250,000 category and Health Test then go down to “Buy an old school to create a sport complex to keep kids active.” From there one can cast a vote. The other way is to text 101654 to 73774. Homan said a person can vote one time each day, up until the counting is over, which is Sept. 1. And they can vote by e-mail and text each day. “In other words, they can vote twice a day,” he said. Homan said he was excited about the possibility. “Once you get the ball rolling people jump in. We can get people interested in baseball and softball to join in, and anyone interested in community activities.” Homan said in soccer alone 400 to 500 kids are involved, and they are not only Waupun residents, many come in from Brandon, Alto and Fox Lake. “If we had a sports complex it would also benefit the community, especially when we have tournaments. Many businesses like gas stations and motels would also benefit,” he said. “I applaud Kevin’s efforts in seeing a way to develop recreational opportunities for our youths,” said Waupun City Administrator Kyle Clark. “We, the city and school and community, are all working together for quality of life issues, which is most impressive.”Homan said if he can get all the kids and parents to vote every day, that could be 2,500 votes, and if they voted by computer and text each day, that could be 5,000 votes each day. “If we get the grant, once everything is done it will all be donated to the city,” said Homan. http://www.refresheverything.com/categories/health Edited August 13, 2010 by Randy
