Ever since I was just a sprout, I wanted to kill big deer and enter a career in the hunting industry, too. Now that I'm 26 and a father, my dreams of being a TV hunter are fading fast. However, I have started up a taxidermy business and fishing guide service on the side, and I own one of the top 3 largest all time bow kills in my county.

As far as any advice on getting on TV, I'd have to say that most of the people I've met who have been lucky enough to do that either started out as guides, or they got in on the ground floor of some new company or product. It takes either a lot of $ or a lot of connections. A little luck can't hurt either.

When it comes to killing a 170 class animal, the first thing you need to be sure of is that you're hunting an area that has that caliber of deer. Killing a 170 most other places is the equivalent of killing a 140 here. I really had to work my butt off to get to that mark. I improved land, tried for years to zero in on the best areas, etc. On the way, I killed several good deer, and I also passed hundreds of deer that anyone else here would have shot. Most of them ended up dead.

For most of us who aren't lucky, it's going to take a lot of time, money, and persistence to tag out on the big boy. I have logged between 350 and 400 hours on stand every season for the last 13 years or so. If I'm doing that much hunting around my work schedule, I can't imagine how much time some of the guys on TV spend, and you can see how long most of them go without killing a 170.

So if these dreams are something you're serious about, just realize that it will be extremely tough, keep a backup plan, and enjoy the journey. Even though I have never reached some of my goals and probably never will, I enjoy sitting around and thinking back on the memories I've made so far.
