TurkeyHunter
Ive hunted for 15 years and just last year really fell in love with Turkey Hunting. So this year I bought me a new gun. After I bought the gun a few days later went to buy shells and just so happens I started talking with another Turkey Hunter. He said he also uses a Mossberg 835 and told me not to waste my time using 3-1/2 shells because hes shot very bad but shot 3' shells great. So the question is should I buy 3 1/2 shells or should I just start off with 3" shells and see how the pattern turns out? Is it worth the kick? Grin.... Thanks! dogdoc
Re: Mossberg 835 Ulti-Mag Shells? just b/c the 3 1/2 inchers didn't pattern well out of his gun doesn't mean it won't out of yours---or the particular choke you will be using. You just have to buy a few and see. I have a bum shoulder so I just stick with the 3 inchers---they pattern just fine out of my
TurkeyHunter
Re: Mossberg 835 Ulti-Mag Shells? Its what ever came with the 835 when I bought it. Full Turkey Choke? I'll try both then. Just just curious what everyone else here used. I have a 1100 and a 1187 but wanted a 24" barrel and camo. http://img213.exs.cx/my.php?loc=img213â„‘=mossberg12ga835ultrimag9hm.jpg

Slugger
Re: Mossberg 835 Ulti-Mag Shells? the stock tube in an 835 turkey is a .695 thats really pretty good considering some of the aftermarket tubes are that size and some even bigger for the mossy. spyderpancake
Re: Mossberg 835 Ulti-Mag Shells? Same here. I have the same gun and mine patterned best with the 3.5 Winchesters, but I am gonna try the new Federal with the wad control. I have heard they shoot very well in a lot of 835's. GWSmith
Re: Mossberg 835 Ulti-Mag Shells? This is what my 835 did with the factory choke and Winchester High Velocity Turkey Loads.... I'm calling this pretty good since the entire area that the pattern covered was all over this bird on the paper!!!
GWSmith
Re: Mossberg 835 Ulti-Mag Shells? PAbowhunter4life
Re: Mossberg 835 Ulti-Mag Shells? So, you only count the ones in the spine and brain huh. That's odd, I was under the assumption that putting a BB through it's wind pipe would do the trick too. Or even the eye, which is in front of the brain. My uncle killed a hen a few years back, flinched when he shot and literally pur one BB through the eye, but maybe he just scared it to death. Personally I think GW's pattern is fine out to 40 yards, could it be denser, sure, but all you need is one BB. My Rhino/Nitro combo will put almost 300 BB's in a 10" circle @ 40 yards, and a TON in the head and neck area, that being said, 1 well placed BB is all it takes. Will his pattern improve with an aftermarket choke, yes, but will his turkey be any deader?
GWSmith
Re: Mossberg 835 Ulti-Mag Shells? FYI...when I processed that picture I did not get the entire picture of the pattern. I shot the center out of that target Are you disputing that if the pattern had been a little to the right you could have easily missed or worse crippled the bird? That would be a big YES...since he would not have had a chest to strut with.

GWSmith
Re: Mossberg 835 Ulti-Mag Shells? No but i'm not so sure i would want that either...LOL...I want soemthing left to take a picture of instead of a bloody pulpsicle for a head 406 is right..we are all on the same page and its cool! I would hunt with him and do the calling anyday(in season of course). He is probably alot like me....an addict to the sport!!! Now if I could find a way to pass by these sports shows, where I always seem to go, and get new turkey calls at...I might have some money left once in a great while....LOL
PAbowhunter4life
Re: Mossberg 835 Ulti-Mag Shells? I'm not saying to go out and hope for one BB in the head, I am simply saying that's all it takes. Is it a good asset to have a very tight patterning gun, yes, but I think too many people forget that grandpap was shooting turkeys with #8 field loads long before turkey loads and chokes were ever invented. So are all the old timers on this board now considered slobs and unethical hunters by your standards? Personally, the reason I bought the Nitro/Rhino set up was because at 40 yards with darn near 300 pellets in a 10" circle it gives me the comfort to know that even if I flinch a bit, that bird is dead.Heck, at 60 yards the thing gives patterns people would kill for at 40 yards. Is the 300 necessary, no, they'll kill a bird just the same as a gun that puts 70 in a 10" circle at 40 yards. Do we all owe the bird respect? Yes, of course we do. However if GW has a pattern like he does at 40 yards, and he feels plenty comfortable shooting it and has confidence in his abilites and gun, then by all means he should blast away. Ethics is about knowing your own personal limitations and abilites, not judging another hunter by what he believes. Me, with my Remington 700 BDL 7MM I'll take shots at deer out to 500 yards if the shot is ideal? Is that unethical, if you see my targets, the answer is no. PAbowhunter4life
Re: Mossberg 835 Ulti-Mag Shells? lol, as soon as I get a chance to I'll take some pictures of my patterns with the Rhino/Nitro set up. Close to 300 BB's in a 10" circle at 40 yards and god know show many in the head and neck lol
