Three Deer Test Suspect Positive for Chronic Wasting Disease In Hampshire County Deer The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (DNR) announced today that three free-ranging white-tailed deer, collected last week in Hampshire County as part of an intensive Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) surveillance effort, tested “suspect positive” for the disease. The University of Minnesota Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory screened the samples using the Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) test which offers fast turnaround time but which must be confirmed with an additional test. Therefore, these samples are undergoing further diagnostic testing using the Immunohistochemistry (IHC) test which is considered the “gold standard” for CWD testing. Final test results are expected next week. “I want to stress that these results are preliminary and identify the need for more definitive testing through IHC on these three samples,” said DNR Director Frank Jezioro. “We will announce the results of the final testing as soon as we receive them from the laboratory.” Earlier this month a single white-tailed deer was confirmed as positive for CWD in Hampshire County . DNR immediately implemented its CWD – Incident Response Plan. As part of that plan, CWD deer collection teams, comprised of personnel from the Wildlife Resources and Law Enforcement Sections, have been conducting carefully planned deer collections within portions of Hampshire County for the past two weeks. “As identified in our Response Plan and based upon these preliminary findings, deer collection teams will now intensify their collection efforts within the surveillance area to accurately determine the prevalence and distribution of CWD in this region of the state,” Jezioro said. “Landowner cooperation throughout this entire surveillance effort in Hampshire County has been just terrific. As we strive to meet this wildlife disease challenge and implement appropriate management strategies, the support and involvement of landowners and hunters will continue to be essential.” CWD is a neurological disease found in deer and elk, and it belongs to a family of diseases known as transmissible spongiform encephalopathies. The disease is thought to be caused by abnormal, proteinaceous particles called prions that slowly attack the brain of infected deer and elk, causing the animals to progressively become emaciated, display abnormal behavior and invariably results in the death of the infected animal. There is no known treatment for CWD, and it is fatal for the infected deer or elk. It is important to note that currently there is no evidence to suggest CWD poses a risk for humans or domestic animals. CWD was first recognized in 1967 in Colorado , and it subsequently had been found in captive herds in nine states and two Canadian provinces and in free-ranging deer or elk in nine states and one province. Earlier this year, the disease was found as far east as New York . The source of infection for wild and captive deer and elk in new geographical areas is unknown in many instances. While it is not known exactly how CWD is transmitted, lateral spread from animal to animal through shedding of the infectious agent from the digestive tract appears to be important, and indirect transmission through environmental contamination with infective material is likely. “As we await the final IHC test results from Minnesota , our well trained and professional staff of Wildlife Biologists, Wildlife Managers and Conservation Officers are working diligently to fully implement DNR's CWD – Incident Response Plan, which is designed to effectively address this wildlife disease threat,” Jezioro said. “Hunters, landowners and other members of the public should feel confident that we have some of the best wildlife biologists and veterinarians in the world, including those stationed at the Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study in Athens , Georgia , working collaboratively on this situation.” More information on CWD can be found at the DNR's Web site: www.wvdnr.gov and the CWD Alliance website: www.cwd-info.org .

Re: I\'m bummin\'... My son goes to college and plays football.....he gets very little time to hunt also but the big picture is he is getting a education and hopefully get him in a job that he will enjoy and not have to struggle like alot of us do....this time will pass by and he will have plenty of time to hunt, football and classes is a full time job in itself keeps him very busy going to classes weight lifting..meetings...practice etc..etc., he still managed to kill 3 last season late season hunting one with a antlerless tag a doe..one muzzleloader doe...one with a bow spike, so all in all he done well with his season cut very short....good luck with college and hopefully you get tree stand time as well.

Re: KY takes away crossbow season! West Virginia is a strong hunting state and our young and older hunters participate heavily......the state "shuts down" come gun buck season so to speak....I don't think our state is a "declining state" for hunters, the crossbow is just another tool to hunt with that we don't need it for everyone, handicapped hunters I agree with (if they keep it to just handicapped hunters)....if there able body and healthy to pull conventional archery equipment back thats what they need to hunt with in my opinion.
-
Re: Switchback shooters I'm really considering buying a Switchback,...do they have a noise problem!?!? Need some feedback on this because I have been hearing great things about this bow.

Re: KY takes away crossbow season! The West Virginia Bowhunters Assoc, lost a battle with WV legislators in a long battle over crossbows here in the mountain state, it's a sad situation but they passed a bill to let "handicapped" people use a crossbow....now I hope they keep a close eye on this and keep it to just the people who are "handicapped" and get there excuse from doctors that are not crooks.....I hope the WV DNR don't let this get out of hand and in everyones hands...I think thats what senator (Shirley Love) wants is for everyone to hunt with them....sad situation here in WV...hope we vote him out soon.

Re: Cable guard lube?? A Teflon cable slide should cure the problem.

Re: Opinion on Martin Bows Welcome to the forum, did you get the ol mountaineer bow from JLJ archery near Beckley? I purchased a bow there for my son once...good people run the place Clancy worked on the bow...I have no experiences with Martin bows but have shot Hoyt's for a long time and say they have done great for me...thinking about getting a Mathews Switchback though, there is alot of good archery equipment out there and everyone has there "favorite" as long as your comfortable shooting them and have confidence in your equipment thats all that matters no matter the cost....I'm from Fayette County myself and hunt the area also..good luck with your new bow search.

Re: West Virginia DNR.....made a big mistake... Alisha, glad to see another WV hunter on the forum.....you being from Raleigh County know our deer hunting took a beating the last two years, I don't know what was on there minds (DNR) I guess the money made them do it because our deer were in no way overpopulated...we have a new head man over the DNR (Frank Jezioro) sp? hopefully he will turn things around since he hunts and goes afield and talks to hunters...not siting behind a desk making regulations...I guess time will tell.

Re: West Virginia DNR.....made a big mistake... vtbowhunter, hopefully the weather will stay mild and we have no winter kill......but the county I hunt (Fayette) has the highest populations of coyotes in the state....now we have to worry about predatation as well...there is no keeping coyotes in check...just tolerate them, and shoot them when you can.

Our wonderful know it all game biologists of the WV DNR made a big mistake and liberalized our doe harvest in the southern counties to the point where they have to shut doe hunting down in southern WV......they made a money racket out of the deer herd and there are many areas that are way overharvested and will take a long time to rebound...I hunt in Fayette County and the deer herd was in no way overpopulated and there was big healthy deer here the DNR sold unlimited permits and us weak hunters bought them now we have very few to no deer to hunt....13 counties are proposed for shut down of doe hunting hopefully the new DNR boss will help our deer hunting rebound not destroy it...very sad.

Re: climbers [ QUOTE ] Where are the Ol'e Man fans?? I have a Grand Ol'e Man climber. It's quiet, fast and stable as all heck. It does weigh 25 lbs so it is not a superlightweight but for a stand that holds 400 lbs... I've literally been up in 150+ times and never questioned it once about quality or safety. It cost me used....(it must have been set up inside) $150....A sure deal from a forum member it was. A new one costs close to $200 [/ QUOTE ] I have a old model Ol' Man Grand Vision also, it's been a great stand and I was thinking about getting another one but they went to the light weight material and all the recall stuff I opted for the Summit....I still use the Ol' Man when I leave a stand in tough to get to areas and use pad locks instead of the pins in hopes it keeps thiefs from taking it in case they find it....it's been a good one Ol' Man needs to go back to making them in the 400 lb capacity model Grand Vision.
