  1. Theres an older farmer around here.He hates tresspassers but is more than happy to let you in if you just stop and ask.Theres a moron kid who lives across the road from one of his properties.Apparently the other night the kid shot a deer, which got into the guys cornfield before it died. Now legally he can go in without permission and retrieve his deer.Option 2 woulda been to find the farmer and drive through the property as close as he can to his deer, and drag it to the truck.Which option does this kid take. He makes a new option, he drives right down the guys cornfield to his deer loads it up, turns around and drives out.Technicaly its tresspassing, around here most people wouldnt care and its pretty standard practice as long as you know whos field it is.Matter of fact, Im sure the guy wouldnt have cared except for one small detail, all his corn was still in that field, the little puke drove right down through the standing corn, got his deer, and drove back out Im not sure if the farmer knows about it yet but if he doesnt I bet he finds out who did it, one way or the other. No wonder people get pissed off and close thier property to everyone.
  2. Re: Question for the cold weather hunters I dont take my kids when the temps drop real low, by that I mean near zero.I on the other hand hunt every day of the late season and it can be way below 0 here in Jan.Last year I hunted several days when the wind chill was - 40 or lower. It migh seem kinda stupid to go when the weathers like that but late muzzleloaders a relatively short season compared to bow season here and the temps can stay like that for days at a time, costing you a big chunk of the season.Plus while theres not any other hunters out, the deer still seem to move good, maybe even better in an effort to stay warm during this time, and theyre bunched up giving you the chance to see deer numbers you never see during the early season. Stay outta the wind, the box blind should help with that.Dress the kids in layers, long johns, tshirts, a wool lined flannel, sweatshirt, a pair of coveralls, then a coat over the top.Facemasks are essential, you dont want any exposed skin if your outside of the blind.Heat loss hapens fast through the head anyway so Ive been told.Fingers and toes get cold the fastest.I like a pair of mittens with the top that flips back, and a pair of lightwieght gloves under them.Feet I like the neoprene socks they make for ice fishing, with a pair of regular socks over the top of them.Dont put the neoprene on till your in the blind though or your feet sweat and it defeats the purpose.I also cram handwarmers in the fnger area of the mittens when its real cold, and keep extras in my pocket just in case.A pair of insulted boots and you should be able to sit for a couple hours in any weather with or without a heater.Dont take the kids if its real cold, to much room for mistakes and frostbite plus freezing to death kinda takes the fun out of it for them.It only takes 45 minutes to get all this on to
  3. Re: Would you do this? Public land is great isnt it.Pheasant season opened this weekend here, me and my brother in law went for a couple hours opening morning. There were hunters everywhere but we found a spot there werent any in sight of, a small foodplot of standing corn about 1/2 mile back into the section. We started walking it with the dogs and the birds were thick in there, and the great part was they kept flocking in from all over the whole time we walked it, other hunters were kicking them up anfd they were coming right to us.We would walk it once both ways and then start over.We did this twice and heard people and dogs heading towards us.Got out in the open at the end of the field and here comes 6 guys from one direction and 4 more from the other along with 3 dogs.We were there first but we were outnumbered and these guys obviously had no intention of going around us, plus the crossfire from the two parties was kinda dangerous spot to be in.We got outta there fast and called it a day. I personaly hate competing for spots to hunt, and feel crowding an area can lead to a dangerous situation. Its no fun hunting if your always looking over your shoulder to see if someone else is coming through or setting your stands according to which way you think a bullet might come from. When it gets to be a bigger pain in the butt than it is fun its time to move on IMO

    how many kids??

Re: how many kids?? When the kids were younger me and the wife would both take them out so nobody was ever home to give out candy.this year me and the baby stayed home and did it.I was kinda suprised , there were only probably 20 kids that showed up.By the end of the night I was telling em to take all the candy they wanted cause I had like 3 bags of it left and my kids were both out and bringing home more LOL.

    Son's first deer

Re: Son\'s first deer Congrats to you all, nice deer!!
  7. Re: Would you still vote for Bush.... Yes sir, I would still vote for Bush.Kerrys got his act together and is sticking to more or less one story on things now but I cant forget all the flip flopping he did and telling people one thing and another group something else early on in the campaign.I cant forget his voting record on gun rights and his trying to pass himself off now as a dedicated hunter.I cant forget his past record on military related votes and his newfound promises for a stronger military with everything they need to get the job done.I guesse I dont entirely trust him, hes changed sides to many times on to many issues, Bush might not be right all the time, but he stands his ground and you know where he stands. To tell you the truth though, I was never into politics much untill this election, in past years I payed very little attention to what was going on.In the past, if Id listened to kerry speak as he has been in the last month or so without knowing what I do about him, I probably would have voted for him.he talks a good game, i just dont believe he means everything that comes out of his mouth.
  8. Re: Questionable shots......... [ QUOTE ] We have another topic running here that involves a new hunter that shot a deer in the shoulder on purpose, because of some information that he saw on a TV program. Should we just tell him, "well, buck up little buddy, maybe next time it will work for you", [/ QUOTE ] Speaking of which why were 86 people happy to give thier opinions on the shot takien in the Hog thread but when a new hunter asks for advice a grand total of 5 replies were made?tell me again how were educating people in here and not criticizing them
  9. Re: No Offense, But................. Deads dead, it all means the same thing no matter how yoyu try to pretty it up, the antis and the undecideds know this as well as we do.
  10. Re: Do you always stand ? When I practice I practice from standing, sitting, and kneeling positions. That way your usually ready for whatever happens to pop up.I prefer to shoot kneeling as a matter of fact but cant do that in a stand
  11. Re: Questionable shots......... [ QUOTE ] Is it wrong to express an opinion that a particular shot selection is a low percentage shot and should not be taken? Is that a negative reply? Is that "flat out criticism of another person"? We have another topic running here that involves a new hunter that shot a deer in the shoulder on purpose, because of some information that he saw on a TV program. Should we just tell him, "well, buck up little buddy, maybe next time it will work for you", or should we tell him that the shoulder is not a good archery aiming spot. I think that post was a great opportunity to straighten out a misconception and help a beginning archer on his way to successful bowhunting. However, if we fear that that will be construed as "flat out criticism of another person", this bowhunter will continue to aim for the shoulder. He may even have occasional success and begin to swear by that shot. Which is helping the bowhunter more, to totally ignore his misconception or try to convince him that he has been given some bum information? Doc [/ QUOTE ] Doc, I gave two examples from this post alone of what I was talking about, niether one was an opinion, just cricitism. One was calling people ignorant, the other, oblivious to the fact a bad shot was taken. I was the first one in the deer hunting room to point out a shoulder blade shot with a bow was a low percentage shot, but I didnt harp on it or ride the guys **** about for the length of the post.If you cant see the difference I dont know what to tell you.
  12. Re: holier than thou forum members [ QUOTE ] lol someone with 15 post asking a moderator too remove this post lol now thats good [/ QUOTE ] I dont think how many posts a guys has really affects anything in here, anyone can ask that a post be deleted at any time, doesnt mean its gonna happen but theres no magic number of posts required to make the request.
  13. Re: They did it to me again [ QUOTE ] Well, I sure hope you get along with your X-wife, because she is going to have to vouch for you here. [/ QUOTE ] Thats the crazy part buckee, Ive got a letter right here from the Dept of treasury stating the money was paid, the date t was paid on, and the amount that was paid on it.Nobody will even look at it.They will only believe it if Montana confirms they recieved it.It wouldnt be to bad but last year they did the same thing and t resulted in legal action against me I went 8 months without my drivers license over it.Hows that for common sense, take a guys license so he cant work then dont give it back untill he pays it off in full by going to the job he cant get to The fact I got my license back oughta be proof enough everything was paid up LMAO.
  14. I was running really late last night so I decided to just drive around and glass a few spots, figured maybe Id try a little spot and stalking if I found a good buck out running around. The pre rut apparently has begun, the first buck I seen was standing right next to the road working a scrape paying no attention to the cars wizzing past him. The second one i seen was about 1/2 before dark, i turned the corner outta the State park here and seen a huge bodied deer going through the public hunting side of it.And I mean he was big probably 225 250 lbs.he stepped into the road way up ahead of me and went right down the middle of it, crossed the highway, and got into the public ground across the road.I hit the gas and sped to the top of the hill just hoping to get a look at him.Theres a standing field with the end rows ct he is standing in, but hes got his head down and hes going back in forth in the corner of the cut end rows.I watch him a minute and he lifts his head up, hes got a big rack, wide and tall, fairly heavy, looks like a shooter. He finally notices my truck sitting there and stops to look at it.He turns his head and I cant believe it, all that antler and it just come to a fork, I couldnt even tell if he had browtines to be considered a 6 pointer He puts his back down and returns to running up and down the corner of the field sniffing so I get my bow, get outta the truck and start walking across the highway in plain view of him.Again he stops to look at my truck, only Im not in it now, he pays no attention to me walking towards him.I go down into he ditch and crawl to the top, draw back the bow and stand up looking over the edge.Hes right there 20 yrds away still looking at my truck broadside, I put the pin behind his shoulder, and, let the bow down and start laughing, its the easiest stalk ive ever put on a buck but hes not the one i want, so i watch him awhile, walk back to the truck and drive off, hes still running around there sniffin when i leave
  15. ive spent the better part of the week getting the paperwork ready for a house loan, its been approved and was expected to go through early next week. One of the conditions of the loan was my child support be brought up to current. No problem, I wasnt behind very far anyway, missed a few payments during the last few months of my wifes pregnancy and when we were running Joey around the state but I wasnt much behind, or so i thought. I had extra money borrowed to try to get most of my debts consolidated onto one monthly payment, which was going to pay everything off anfd save me a bundle of money every month.I told the bank to go ahead and take part of the money and send directly to child support to speed things up and get rid of a lot of paperwork. the mortgage lady calls me and tells me my child supports behind by about 2400$ and its wayt more then I reported to them. I cant believe this si i get on the internet and look at my account, my tax return which was sent to them this spring, and which I thought along with my monthly payments had things pretty much current wasnt shown.I called them, they dont know anything about it. This was Tuesday of this week.I start putting 2 and 2 together and it dawns on me, they did the same thing last year. The federal returns arent given to iowa, theyre sent straight to Montana where my kid lives. It got so far outta hand last year they took my drivers license over money theyd already recieved and that had been sitting there for 2 months.Once again Montana didnt tell iowa they recieved the money.Iowa reprts to a collection agency and all the paperwork I get comes from Montana, Ive been screwed for the better part of a year and wasnt even aware of it.According to Montana Im caught up more or less, according to Iowa Im 2400$ behind, Iowa never even notifies me im supposedly this far behind. At this point its only tuesday like I said, the loan doesnt go through till next Tuesday or Wed.I call Iowa, explain what happened, ask em to get it straightened out and call me back.Yesterday Id heard nothing back, I called them, theyd not even looked into it yet.I get pretty upset at this point and tell em to call Montana.I call em back last night, they left a message in Montana but havent heard nothing.I call em again this morning, they still havent heard anything and havent tried calling again.I finally call Montana myself, theyre very friendy but misunderstand what I need done, instead of contacting Iowa they sent me a letter out this afternoon that may or may not get here by the time the loan goes through.I call em back tonight, a whole office full of people sitting there and the only one thats "authorized to call" iowa is gone till Monday morning. So I leave another voice mail, Iowas made very little effort to help me out and dont seem interested one way or the other.Im so mad now Ive got a migrane, all i need is someone to make a two minute phone call and fax me a paper, and its all staightend out.Apparently that is to much to ask.To make that worse this is on my credit report which the bank looked at when they set my interest rate, if it had been reported properly Id be paying a much lower rate since that and one other thing were the only 2 bad things in there. Now the paperworks done, the lawyers are ready to sign and child supprts gonna be getting a big xchunk of money thats already been promised to another company if this dont get straightend out.**** with it, im going huntin.
  16. Re: Questionable shots......... [ QUOTE ] Shot selection risk assessment is indeed an individual choice and one that any responsible bowhunter should consider carefully. A good time to consider it is here in these forums rather than mulling over all the consequences in the field under "heat-of-the-battle" situations. That is why I like these kinds of topics. It gives us the opportunity to thrash out all the different scenarios ahead of time. [/ QUOTE ] Theres a difference between talking things out ahead of time and comments like [ QUOTE ] I can't explain why people take bad shots. Maybe just inexperience, lack of patience or just being ignorant (not stupid, ignorant) to the consequences. I hope it isn't they don't care. [/ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] What I am talking about is the complete obliviousness to the fact that a bad shot was taken. [/ QUOTE ] And Ive seen a lotta more negative comments than these in several of the other recent posts.im not talking about discussing shot placement, Im talking about people who read a post and then ride the guys butt about it for as long as possible preaching about ethics.I see it happen in every hunting website I visit, not just here and most of them its a lot worse than it is in here.Theres a fine line between debating somethings and flat out criticism of another person.A lotta what ive read recently has leaned more towards outright critism than anything that can be usefully learned from.Thats the only reason I even posted anything on this to start with.If people wanna give thier opinions thats fine, if you wanna question somebodies ethics and preach about a situation youve probably never been in thats another thing alltogether. If you wanna accuse somebody of deliberately taking a bad shot remember the next time you shoot at a deer you might be the one with no blood trail and an arrow in a spot you never aimed for.And depending on how you word your posts in here you might be the next one getting your butt chewed for shot placement. One last thing and Im done, when talking about showing remorse or admitting to a mistake a lotta you guys need to realize, when people post in here theyre trying to describe something thats not easy to describe, they usually have a deer shot that they havent recovered yet and are worried about recovering, and thier minds not alltogether on the post thier making, if its worded poorly you oughta try giving them the benifit of the doubt, eventually what actually happened will come out.

    Finding hit deer

Re: Finding hit deer Well I answered this in the other room but Ill paste it in here as well.I bowhunt off the ground a lot and theres a huge difference most of the time in the blood trail, or at least the first part of the bloodtrail, in shooting one from ground level and shooting one from an elevated stand.Heres my 02 cents worth, hope it helps. Quote: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- People on tv always say the best shot is right behind the shoulder blade or in the very middle of the shoulder blade. And thats were i hit her. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Candy, dont aim for the shoulder blade. With a gun its a good shot, with a bow you often dontr have enough energy to get through it into the vitals, always try to aim behind the shoulder. When you hunt from ground level with a bow, like I often do you will run into poor blood trails at the point of the shot quite often. From a treestand you get an angle down through the deer, the lower exit hole gives you almost an immediate blood trail. With a bow from the ground the arrow passes straight through, the chest cavities gotta fill up with blood befoe you start find a good blood trail. If you bowhunt from ground level make sure to watch the deer after the shot, pinpoint where it goes out of your line of sight, wait a few minutes and mark that spot.If theres no blood where you originally shot this will be your new starting point for trying to bloodtrail them.Dont rush in and mark the spot, wait a few minutes, and go in quietly to mark it. Getting back to not having a lower exit hole to bleed out of, your entry and exit holes will both be up on the deer, when you start tracking dont concentrate to hard on the ground, look up on leaves and tall grass at about the level of your hips or stomach, often times a deer thats not leaving much blood on the ground will rub it off on these things as it runs, you just have to look up a little higher to find it.Eventually if its a good hit it should turn into a good blood trail on the ground but dont expect to find it there right away. Listen when the deer runs away to what direction it goes, if you cant find blood right off this may be your only clue as to what direction it went after leaving your sight.Look for tracks, if the ground is soft enough you can sometimes follow them quite aways on tracks alone. Waiting was a good idea, if your not sure about the hit wait even longer, a good shot, double lung i only wait about 15 minutes, a questionable shot Ill often leave t till the next morning if it isnt real hot out.If you hit the shoulder blade again consider it a questionable shot and wait, you dont know how far the arrow went in, you might only get 1 lung and it takes them longer to die.Dont push the animal.and remember try not to hit the shoulder blade.hitting that coupled with shooting from the ground very often you wont find any blood at all escpecially if the arrow didnt go in very far.Good Luck

  19. Re: Questionable shots......... [ QUOTE ] That is my opinion and I am sure many will disagree, stating that they made such and such a shot. What an individual thinks is ethical and what is truly ethical are often not one and the same. My ethics are a lot tighter than most, but than again, I am the one I have to live with. [/ QUOTE ] Funny, I thought ethics were a personal thing, and the whole point behind them was that your the one hat has to live with them. Now according to your statement I might not be ethical at all.Im not disagreeing based on shot choices, Im disagreeing based on the fact that a lotta you times you have just a couple seconds to make up your mind, get drawn, aimed and shoot. And only you know what you are capable of.If you blow it and take a bad shot in those couple seconds does it make you unethical?Or just mean you misjudged the situation that one time? I didnt get into the "I stuck a Hawg post" because i was afraid Id say something that would really piss someone off.But it keeps getting harped on over and over and people keep saying they wouldnt have took that shot. How do you know? You werent there and the majority of people who said that havent ever seen a 180 class buck from a treestand, much less close enough to shoot at. Micheal waddel shot a deer quartering towards him, if I understood right he put the arrow where the brisket and front leg come together.Unethical?Theres less bone in the way there then you have on a broadside shot, matter of fact every deer Ive cut up theres no bone where them come together. In terms of penatration, this is probably the ideal spot to shoot one.Its all vitals on the far side of that point as well.He knew he could make that shot, it was his call. The buck I killed last year was shot the same way, facing straight at me.I was on the ground, he was facing straight at me walking towards me in a picked beanfield, only thing in between us at the time I shot was about 5 yrds.I knew it would take his vitals out and I knew he had to run over a half mile to even get outta sight of me, much less to get into anything to hide in.He dropped well within sight of me.I knew all these things well in advance though and it was a risk I was 99% sure would pay off.Does this make it an unethical shot?Id do it again under the same circumstances, would I do it in a heavily covered area, not a chance.Theres different circumstances surrounding every shot, if you werent in those circumstances once again you probably cant say you wouldnt have done it.Would I recomend taking this shot to anyone else, nope, thats something they have to decide for themselves depending on the circumstances of thier hunt. I will agree size shouldnt influence a shot, but it very often does. Some shots shouldnt be taken, but thats common sense stuff, if you dont have enough light to shoot, if the deers farther out than you can confidently shoot, things like that. But shot angles something you have to decide for yourself.
  20. Re: Do you really hold out for the big ones? Here goes LOL.I think alot has to do with where you hunt, I hold out for a bigger buck but according to tv and magazines the state of Iowa has monster bucks running all over the place, its not the case throughout the whole state however.Im in a agricultural area, which most of the state is, but here its all wide open fields, very little cover, and high hunting pressure.A nice buck in my area of the state will carry 100 inches of antler or so, so theres no P&Y or B&C entries at all for my counties and theres no deer from here recorded in the iowa big bucks records. So while I will hold out for a nice buck, someone in the other end of the state may have let him walk.Same thing with private and public ground, if you hunt mainly private ground with little pressure your gonna see bigger, older deer, if you hunt public ground there may be deer like that on it, but theyre heavily pressured and probably not gonna show themselves as regularly during the daylight. should say that there are P&Y and larger size bucks in my area, but I havent connected with one yet.Last year I let the biggest buck Ive had a shot at walk, he was around a 130 class 10 pointer but there was a much larger one i was hunting, I dont regret not shooting him but he woulda been my biggest to date if I had.Shoot what makes you happy
  21. Re: Absolutely Brilliant!! last year on opening weekend of pheasant season I went out.we cant hunt till 8:00 for pheasants.I went out, found a really good spot nobody was in and walked through it, missed a few birds and was coming back out when a car full of my buddies pulled up.They asked what I was doing and I told em going to another spot.they asked what was wrong with the one I was in and I told em Id already been through it.They informed me I had forgotten to set my clock back for daylight savings time and had been illegaly shooting at pheasants for the last hour To make it worse a DNR pulled up about then and checked our licenses, nobody mentioned my extra hour of hunting to him though and he musta thought we were just visiting waiting for legal shooting time, but I about crapped myself
  22. Re: MISUNDERSTANDING ON \"ABSOLUTE HOG I STUCK\" [ QUOTE ] I disagree that the size of the buck shouldn't matter. With most hunters whether they admit it on here or not would have taken that shot, I think. Most Hunters, that is. [/ QUOTE ] One thing Ive noticed and I think stinger hit it right on the head, its easy to criticize someone elses actions but most guys woulda done the same thing weather they will admitt it or not.If i understand you correctly the buck was facing straight away from you, IMO thats not much more unethical than taking a severly quartering away shot which seems to be pretty commonly accepted, the margin for errors about the same, hit a little to far back with a quartering away shot and you hit guts.hit it right and you probably only get one lung, whats the difference??
  23. Re: Questionable shots......... [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] I don't recall seeing alot of posts lately of people being "completely oblivious" to bad shot placement... [/ QUOTE ] Two that come to mind are the one just recently "sticking a hog" and "Shot a doe, didn't find her. The CAN Works!!". If it sounded like a condemnation, then I apologise. I am slightly fired up about this as the anti's are all over this board and looking for any amunition that they can get. [/ QUOTE ] Steve. not sure if one of them you are refering to was my post about a doeI shot where the arrow didnt penetrate or not but im sure it is. Let me ask you a question, if you have a deer feeding, broadside to you at 15 yrds, with just her head and front legs turned slightly, and i mean very slightly towards you is it an ethical shot??Would you take it?All I did was underestimate how far her twisting her body like that would put her shoulder blade back, if Id of hit 1 inch farther to the rear it woulda been a double lung shot.Ive never shot a deer that was standing in that particuliar position before and i bet a lotta other guys havent either in here.I had no idea that would effect the position of her shoulder blade on her body, in hindsight i probably should have but through a real small peep sight it looked like a clean shot. One inch was all that saved her, there was no blood anywhere and Im almost certain the shot didnt kill her, the arrow couldnt have went in past the broadhead. Everyones gonna make a bad shot, does this make it unethical?Would you have took the shot i just described?point is plain and simple, if you werent in the stand with them you dont know the circumstances surrounding that particuliar shot, so you have no business questioning thier ethics.A lotta things happen real fast sometimes and trying to type all that into a forum sometimes things get lost in the translation. Speaking of questionable shots on video I was watching these guys sheep hunting on the outdoor channel this morning. The sheep were running away and one stopped to look back, he was facing almost staight away from the hunters. They ranged him at 402 yrds, with a little red dot on the screen they showed where "proper' shot placement would have to be on this animal. It was almost straight up his butt. How did a guy shooting a sheep in the butt at 400 yrds get his own tv show.At least they advised not to try that shot unless you were well aquianted with your rifle
  24. Re: Really need some advice for the kid. Well, 100% chance of seeing deer is always better than a 40% chance of seeing deer.Try not to get the impression you have to get her a deer her first time out, its an unrealistic expectation for you to have to try to live up to.It would be nice but its part of hunting. Kids arent actually to hard to please as long as they see something, and you cant expect a whole lotta patience from them.Id almost guesse she would be alot happier sitting there for awhile and seeing deer with the possibility of a shot right at first light than sitting in a funnel for several hours without seeing anything. Im not sure what your hunting with for a gun but with a rifle, if shes spent any amount of time practicing, 100 yrd shot with it might not be as difficult for her as you think, escpecially in an open field. personally Id see what the weather and mostly the wind was doing that morning, explain to her the importance of keeping the wind in your favor and choosing your hunting spots based on that.If the wind isnt a factor in either spot just tell her the choices and let her decide
  25. Re: From me to you.(Raffle) I never win anything but what the heck
