just finished off my best season ever yesterday with shooting 10 coyotes, ended up with I believe 225 coyotes, 15 badgers, 20 fox, and 4 coons.I was given prob 25-30 coyotes but had prob 50 that were either damaged to bad[ started shooting a 22-250 this year] untill I figured out you could not shoot them on a angle lol, needed strait on or strait broadside. or soem had mange and some a new blight not sure soem sort of lice. with the 22-250 I made more 4-500 yard shots than I did in my whole life, just love the gun, got a 425 yard fox kill and a 350 tard fox kill on film for predator quest, should be airing in july.to top it all off the prices are awsome, last sale averaged 90 for coyote, just under 80 for fox and 70 for badger, the may sale is lower but still second year in a row I will not be in the hole thoasands of dollers lol!!

What to do with coyote carcass after skinning
sureshot replied to Flyswadder's topic in Varmint & Predator Hunting
my first 125 or so coyotes by xmas I was able to dump in acoulee at the inlaws, I would haul out once a week, last time I was there and dropped off 30 or so the last ones were all cleaned up, here I dropped a truckload in a farmers dead pile he has sht over 10 coyotes off feeding on it. mother nature taked care of itself, the coulee at the farm has over 1000 dead coyotes in it over the past 10 years and all we ever find is the odd skull or leg bone, they keep it clean, and never a stink in spring, all cleaned up! -
awsome looking dog!!never seen a black one!! congrats on a awsome coyote!!

coyotes are the hardest to trap, fox and cats are dumb compared to coyotes!! when I started I could not get a coyote, thye would walk right around the set, I then started to die the traps in boiling water with sage in it[lotsof sage were I trapped] they I would wax them with trap wax and hang outside, never in a vehicle or with scent anyway, always wore rubber boots and rubber gloves, plus my coveralls were always stored outside, do not want to kneel down with smelly clothes, first thing I didw as find were coyotes were trails ect, fencelines, my best set was knolls in pastures with old holes on top, coyotes like to lookout from hills, and if there is a pre dug badger hole, I was set, I would put either pre bought lure, or more that often my own that I made out of all the guts from birds I shot that fall and let ripen for afew weeksin the sun, a spoon ful isall you need, putit on a stick down the hole, then dig a little indentation in snow or dirt, set trap and either stake it or tie to something near as a drag, I will set trap a little off to one side of hole and set branches or rocks so the coyote will step on trap not come in from side! once the trap is set I cover it with wax paper so it will not freeze down then either sprinkle snow or sifted dirt over top to cover it a bit, then I put a few feathers over the trap and around the area, seems to really help, then the end thing I did was get a branch and rub out any sign I had, footprints, kneeling marks, anything, then I always sprayed a bit of skunk essance to help to cover any scent I may of left. if setting on a trail make sure you use natural stuff like logs, or brush, or rocks to make a coyote step in the trap instead of going around, good luck hope this helped a bit, if need info on trap die and wax there are many trapping supply companies online, justgoogle it and they will put you on the right track!!

pruts, I still have a 223, its a norenko cheap gun but super accurate, has killed me well over 1000 coyotes the past 6-7 years, I love it, what I love about it is limited hide damage, what I hate is not a far killer, is good to 300 or so but once doubles come in it does not have the penetration at 250 yards to take down a running away coyote, you need to hit them then when spinning finish off,!the 250 si going to be awsome, went out and did some long range shooting 2 nights ago, 300 yards 5 inches low, 400 yards about 12-13, put a 2 liter pop bottle on a fence post in a pasture and just before dark when I got back to the ranchers yard ranged it at 426 yards, I aimed about 4 inches high and hit justbelow the middle of the bottle full of water, just like a explosion! canot wait to try 500 yard plus, with that 24 power scope looks like a 150 yards shot with my .223! good luck out coyote hunting!!

welcome, first off I would stay away from coyote vocalization unless you are certain you areblowing the right sound, a challangehowl will scare 95% of the coyotes to the next county, female invitaion will sound wierd to them now, I donot start with vocalization till at least nov 15, only vocolization I use now is pup distress, somany pups out there that they are scared of adults that arenot mommy or daddy and will not come in! get to a stand as questly as possable, even driving in make sure they donot hear you, if the area is hardly driven they are keen to a vehicle and will be harder to get in, once in location set up so you can see downwind, figure out were the puppies are and set up so you will get a shot before they wind you becouse the majority will try to circle down wind!! next start off with a disress sound not so loud incase there is a coyote bedded 300 yards away, just becouse you werre so quiet getting in htere easlly could be, I like to blow 15-30 seconds, and sit for 5-10, then blow harder, get the sound out there, blowfor 30 seconds or soand sit for 5-10 with verylittle movement, coyotes eyes are different than ours, they see in different shades and have more rods than cones in the eyes making them see better at night but also very good ability to see movement, alsomake sure you can getthe best camo available for the surroundings!! if you see a coyote stop blowing you want them to have a idea were the sound is coming frombut not exact, if he stops lip squeek, orblow the call gently, use a mouse squeeker, once he gets in a low spot get ready for shot!! If noting comesin within 25 min or so this time of year I would blow a pup distress and sit for 1-0 more, if nothing in 35-40 min try a new stand, windy days not as long, calm cold days a bitlonger, the sound travels better!! If you shoot one instantly do a pup distress and sit, I bet I get extra coyotes in 20-25% of the times Ido it! also make sure were you are postioned when calling, no skyline, backa gainst a tree, fence, brush ect, this will help allot Good luck!! BTW I just recieved my 22-250 last week, got a TC venture[bolt actioned clip] camoed up, topped it with the predator queust 6-24 power simmons scope, wow since simmonsand bushnell joined up, they have came out with great optics! been shooting the hornady superformance and its a tack driver, they say less than a inch and its actuallyless that 1/2 inch, shoots as good as I can!!

http://www.realtree.com/img/2/medium/IMG_00042.JPG here as a pic of my 32 inch mulie with a 5 inch drop, Iknow there was bigger scoring deer in the area, but I am a droptine lover and love width, this deer has it all! 3 hard days of hunting and seeing the big boy once and non typ that scores about 200 inch [young deer hope he makes the fall] a few times, had thisguy walk down the draw one day as Iwas glassing neighboring fields, I couldnot pass a 50 yard broadside shot, he made it about 10 yards and that was it! what was cool was he was very vocal, gruntinga and a sort of snort wheese I will never forget, never heard a mulie that vocal especiallybin velvet, got the watch him for a good 15 minutes before the shot, was great!!

had a sale this weekend at north american fur auctions and the prices dropped pretty good, last sale I averaged close to 90 dollers a hide this sale had 113 in and 83 sold at a average of 64 dollers, the other 30 were held back becouse the auction would not sell them for a low price.still not complaining on a over 60 average but it is over 2 grand from last sale less, I had one of the top 8 coyotes at the sale the top batch went for 350 dollers, highest coyote I ever sold, the top lot at last sale was 700. I am sure the market is starting to get flooded, people heard of the big prices last sale and hunted hard, over 94000 coyotes this sale, ususlaly the may sale has less than 50000. I exect next year the prices to be lower again, lots held over from this sale and what was not sold.[guys have the option to not sell in may sale and hold them till next feb where prices are usually higher.

been terrable up here this spring, I believe becouse we had such a bad winter 2 years ago they had the oppertunity in the deep snow to kill a ton of deer, I think some of the alfa males that are alive then are doing the majority of the killing, had 4 calls in the past month from guys who have never had a problem, one guy lost 4 calves in 5 days including a purebred 10 day old bull calf, he was not impressed, I hate to kill them this time of year but when a rancher who lets me have the run of his land all year asks I cannot say no, as I drove in the yard at daybreak 5 were a couple hundred yards off, I got 2, the wind started to get up after a couple stands and getting winded me and a buddy decided to do the spread apart, I called and he went 250 yards or so downwind to try and get them sneeking in, had a pair come in but was in thick brush and we never got a shot, I got him to call next stand I positioned myself about 300 yards un a ridge with draw coming up, not compleatly downwind but they should come up the draw I thought, within 5 minutes 3 coyotes were sitting on a hill 3/4 mile away,[it was a pack of 3 that took his bull clf, he watched as mother chased off one and 2 more would come in, went on for a few minutes till he got over there.] I watched him call and the coyotes never moved, I then decided it was time to tick them off so I let out a howl then waited they sat up alert, then I challanged them, this got them going big time, we challanged back and forth for about 10 miutes till they came on a charge in, first one shot at 10 yards second at 75 third at 250 up the pooper and he rolled and ran in the draw, first 2 were big males and pretty sure the third was also could not find him, was surprized to find 3 males runnign together but they must of hunted together the bad winter and after mating season and a spring with out many gophers or deer they decided to take calves, no more!! sad to kill 3 coyotes that would of brought me prob 150-200 bucks in dec but I know I made a rancher super happy and i have a place to hunt anytime I want!!

Lil advice from the predator hunters
sureshot replied to xzavyer's topic in Varmint & Predator Hunting
any prey sound will work, justbe patiant, i would stay away from any vocalazation till you catch on to what sounds are needed when, biggest theng while coyote hunting is setting up in a position were you will see him before he smells you, know the wind the coyote will most likely try to get downwind, sneek in very quiet, like you are going to a deer stand, sit down, throw a few distress sounds out there, sit and wait quetly and still, they will spot movement very easy, [be camoed good] sit for a few minutes then do 30 more seconds of calling, make the call sound like blood gurgling in a throat of a rabbit trying to catch its breath, keep this up for 1/2 hour or more, in my opinion early year and windier days most will be in within 15 minutets, later on when they get warry, I have had up to a hour. Some guys start up with a light sequence[quiet] I say its great in thick brush encase a coyote is close, I hunt mainly open pasture and fields I start as loud as I can, I have read articles that the jolt of the loudness will make a sleeping coyote get more exited, no idea but I do reccomend in thick brush start out with lighter volume. good luck !! -
congrats,

was taken In sask canada this week by Cody Robbins of the live to hunt tv show, Awsome hunter with some huge deer in the past, sounds like it was all on film also, the pics are not out becouse of sponsership responsibilities but i see one pic today double drop with balls on the end, scores 294, nets 287 non typ.perfect deer, Cody was filming for Jim Shockey for years and learnt from the best! Now he has his onw show, congrats Cody!! There has been some monstars taken up here this week, I personally have heard of 10 that are over 190 inch and 3 over the 220 inch mark, great year for antlers to grow!!

I know most are getting exited for deer hunting, anyone for coyotes, I am dreaming of a pair running in to the call, only about 6 more weeks till I start going out checking the hides, cannot wait!!!
-
in my may sale I had about 70 coyotes, averaged 73 dollers, 10 badger averaged 76 and 8 fox averaged 31, this sale last week I had 100 coyotes averaged 61, 6 badger averaged 72, and 8 fox averaged 28, 4 coons and got 8 doller average, first year in over 20 that I made any money nice to be able to pay the fuel bills lol!! My average this time on coyotes would of been better but they said out of the 100 I sent in 13 were small to med size, impossable in the late season, they are pulling my hides to see what happened, in the past 4 years there I have sold only 10 small ones out of prob 700 hides, those all were in the first sale to were I have novemebr pups in there. does not really matter but they were close to 35-40 dollers different between large and med hided of the same grade. huge difference, just want to know what went on. Kind of exited to get a 7 grand check on the 23 put in my bank account lol!!

just really started this past weekend, seen a few mulies still with antlers, the whitetail were burried under 4 ft of snow but its finally just about gone, did hike about 15-20 miles this weekend, have about 35 in hte truck, found a nice matched palmated whitetail and a non typ mulie that will be a monster this year, hopefully I get a few more weeks before the trees start to fill outto much.

I shoot the .223 they are good out to 300 yards, have shot a few farther but out to 300 they are most likly not to go any farther, the .17 rimfire is not a coyote gun buddy has one and great little fox gun out to 75 yards or so but not enough for a coyote unless lots of tracking or head shots within 50 -75 yards, the .17 centerfire is a different anser though, good flat shooting gun but shells harder to find and like you said easilly deflected or moved by the wind, there are a few different centerfires out there now and I expect they are good to 300 also but like I said small bullet lots of movement.I will stick with my .223. good luck

got my 50th coyote yesterday, could easilly get to my 100 by new years weekend, I have at least 12 days to hunt I will need 4 a day , will not be to bad if weather is good every day but doubtfull, good luck everyone!!
