Re: Craziest trail cam photo ever.. Indeed I've seen much more crazy trail cam photos. Those photos of the clown are however among the scariest trail cam photos I've ever seen lol

Re: 2 years! congrats, I just realized yesterday I've been here for 3 although I'm kind of an off and on poster. God I've been visiting hunting sites for a long time now, my own site is 3 years old, but I've been hanging around hunting websites for almost 5 years now.

Re: deer getting away you aren't the only one, but at least you know you hit it. Last year I hit a doe in the late season with my bow, I did a TON of searching. Grid-searched a 100 yard radius from the place where the deer was standing, no arrow, no blood, no hair. I followed some deer tracks into the woods that I was sure were from the doe, nothing. Few months later I found the arrow in the middle of a deer trail while shed hunting broken in half. It was 150 yards from where I shot it. I felt horrible for having assumed it what a miss even though I did so much searching. In your case though you know you hit so I'd get back out there.

Re: Why so many poor shots this year??? well I found my arrow from last night, nothing on it, clean miss. I'm pretty sure I shot just under her, she was standing on a slight downhill incline with me just a bit above her, I think that's what threw me off I didn't take into effect the slope. Sometimes at the moment of truth, little things like that simply slip your mind.

Re: Why so many poor shots this year??? For some I think it's just bad luck, I know it has been for me this year, 2 misses this week. First time I mis-judged the distance. Last night I dunno what I did wrong, but it went right under him. I did a ton of practicing this summer, just sometimes things don't go your way.

Re: bow kills? absolutely nothing, I hit a doe but didn't find it, I thought it was a miss. I had my second miss on a doe this week tonight. Now I'm out of arrows and money so I guess I'm done with bow season since I've been out of a job for almost 2 months. I seem to be jinxed with bow. I have high hopes for firearm season however.

Re: Sad.... that's why I never filled out any of the papers the recruiters had in high school just to get a lanyard or whatever other little souvenir they were handing out when you filled out the little card. I filled out the selective service thing online and that's as much as they are getting out of me. If I had wanted to join the military I would have out of High School. I've got one classmate from High School overseas right now, right in the heart of Baghdad, gives me a little scare everytime I see the flag at half-mast because I know someone from Michigan died and I just hope it's not him. I have another friend in the Marines, but they don't think he's gonna go thank god. It is sad to see something like that, the tactics of recruiters have been seeming to sink to new lows over the past few months, I read an article on it a little while ago in the paper.

Re: Muzzleloader buck fromlast night (PICS) I think the most amazing part of this post is the original post with pics, it reads like a post from someone who just routinely killed a young buck or doe for management purposes. I think most of us would have dripped saliva all over the keyboard and left a garbled post no one could understand until we could correct it weeks later after the shaking let up a little. I know I would have. Congrats, that is awesome!

Re: Shotgun for Deer questions I've used a lot of different kinds of slugs I also shoot an 870, I've got a lowpower Swift scope on it, it's served me well so far but as far as loads go, I have to say, while saboted slugs shoot a lot flatter than the traditional foster-style slugs, it seems the foster slugs have a lot better stopping power than the sabots. I lost a buck that I hit with a sabot, but I've recovered every one I've hit with fosters. I haven't used the sabots a whole lot, my uncle does and he had to put 2 in the last buck he shot after the buck got up after being hit. I've had my best success with Remington foster style slugs, although I'm gonna pick up some more sabots this year. The Nikon Pro staff scopes are very nice, I bought one for my muzzleloader and have loved it so far. A little pricy, as compared to the scope on my shotgun but it's worth it.

Re: 10 point down!!! (PICS!) Good looking buck, looks like things are beginning to pick up here in Michigan huh? A guy I know took a 13 point last night, man, makes me wanna get out there again right now lol I'm waiting a few days since I missed a doe on Sunday, let em calm down a little. Hope I can have some similar luck.

Re: Who all has missed? I missed on Sunday at a large doe at 25 yards. That's my 3rd miss with the bow, the first was at a 4 point, second a doe. I really wanna get this monkey off my back with the bow, I've never killed anything with my bow. I've got 2 misses with shotgun at a nice 8 point. (He didn't move after the first shot) However I don't mind that miss anymore since I shot a bigger buck a week later from the same blind. My latest miss was due to a misjudging of yardage as far as I can tell, she first came out at 30 yards, I was on the ground, and right as I was cliping the release to the string a doe stepped out 5 yards from me, and immediately busted me of course. For whatever reason, the doe in the field continued toward me and I took the shot, no sound of a hit, no blood, no hair, did a lot of searching. Lost my arrow, oh well it happens. I just have bad luck with the bow. I actually lost the first deer I ever hit with the bow last year, I actually searched for a long time but never found a drop of blood or even a hair. Later while shed hunting I found the back half of my arrow in the middle of a deer trail 150 yards from where I took the shot. Hope she made it, funny thing was I even searched that area where I found the arrow, yet I never found it or any sign there.

Re: Shooter????? We haven't reached the point in our QDM that a buck like that is not a shooter. It's still a fairly young deer, but still it's a shooter here. I'd never hear the end of it if I didn't shoot.

Re: GOt a big Problem It's more fun to kill it and THEN figure out how you will get it out of the woods. Personally I've always wanted to do a recovery/drag out loading solo, at least once. I've had help with all my kills. Then again, I'm 6'1 190 lbs, it'd be a lot easier for me to get a deer out than it would be for you. Just go out and enjoy the hunt, don't worry about how you will get the deer out.

Re: intimidation..... [ QUOTE ] "If it bleeds, you can kill it"...... [/ QUOTE ] "No it didn't kill you because you weren't armed!" "No sport!" Off topic I know, I just love that movie.

Re: What do you do While on Stand well this depends on the situation, if I've been out there for 4 or 5 hours without seeing so much as a squirrel I usually take a nap. Sometimes I bring electronic games, sometimes magazines and sometimes books. During gun season I usually don't do this because the action can be fast and furious, one time I had been in the blind for no more than 10 min before 2 dogs ran some does behind me, I always try to be prepared for those deer when they are pressured like that by dogs and other hunters. During bow season I most often take little naps because I rarely see deer earlier than the last hour before sunset, I just keep my ears open. BTW, I actually shot my first buck less than 5 min after waking up from a nap, 15 min after that I shot my second one.

Re: Bug Spray?? [ QUOTE ] One word. THEMACELL. I gaurentee you will wonder how you ever hunted without it. Also I hav had deer 15yds downwind and never new I was there. [/ QUOTE ] I agree, I got one a few weeks ago, it works like a charm.

Re: Good opening morning! well just got in from the first hunt of 2005. Saw 2 does, a big one and a yearling. After watching them for about 5 mins I decided to try and take the big doe if she came close enough, unfortunately for me she never did. Eventually they got spooked and ran back into the woods, I tried to stop her by going "bleh" a few times, even had the bow at full draw, but they had made up their minds, they did come back out at last light right after I lowered my bow to the ground. Not a bad way to start the season considering I was expecting nothing. It sounded like there was definitely other deer behind me, but they never showed themselves.
-
Re: Good opening morning! I stayed in bed, it's too early forme to get too excited, deer activity won't really pick up for at least a few more weeks. I'm gonna go out tonight, but I honestly do not expect to see much, if anything.

Re: piebal deer? oh so there's more in your area, it seems that once you see one piebald, you start seeing lots of them. I noticed this in conversations with other hunters on the internet who took multiple piebalds in a season, and it seems to be true here as well. We had never seen a piebald before last season and I know of at least 3 that have been seen in our area since then, possibly more. I wonder why this is, does the inferior gene really get passed on that easily? I'd love to hear what a biologist would think about this.

Re: Shoot thru scope mounts yeah, I agree I thought about getting those for my Omega, then decided to just use the scope to simplify things, I used my shotgun with a similar scope in thick brush and took deer with no problems, I don't think it would be one with the muzzleloader.
-
Re: What is the best Muzzleloader out there? I'd say the Encore, I used my uncle's Encore and took a 7 point with it and was very impressed with the performance. I now own an Omega, I wish I could have gotten the Encore, but it was a bit out of my price range, I'm pretty pleased with it so far, it seems to shoot just as good, the real test will be the first time I take it into the field.

Re: piebal deer? congrats to your buddy, I got this game cam pic back in April, I'll be keeping an eye out for this guy come November. He's the only exception I'll make in our QDM. I haven't seen this buck in person, but I have seen a piebald doe in the wild before, she had just a tiny bit of brown on top of her head, the rest of her was almost completely white.

Re: what r u looking for this season I've got my eye out for 4 or 5 bucks that I've seen that I've decided are shooters. The smallest of the bunch is an about 100" 8 point. The largest is a nice non-typical with huge double brow tines, I have no clue what he might score. I was gonna take the first large mature doe I got a shot at, but I've changed my mind to holding out for one of those bucks for at least a few weeks.

Re: LAZY SLOB HUNTERS we deal with that kind of crap all too often here, in fact a group of people who accused me and my family of poaching were busted 2 years ago for poaching at night themselves. They were actually caught by an offical CBM scorer so it was all the more funny, apparentely they shot EVERYTHING, buck, doe, fawn they didn't care. great job calling em in, I would have done the same thing.

Re: DETERGENT FOR WASHING YOUR HUNTING CLOTHS!!! yeah I agree with most of the above, just because it says scent free, and it may smell like it to you as well. But I don't think their goal in making All is to fool a whitetail's nose, just a human's. I'll stick to stuff made for hunters.
