Re: you first deer ....let\'s hear the story I was hunting in a funnel going from a bedding area to a bean field. At 5:00 2 does came walking perfectly and gave me a 7 yard shot. Took a total of about 30 seconds. I heard her pile up about 40 yards away. Man was i pumped!

The last 2 years i have been passing everything except a wallhanger. Well i've had does all over me those 2 years. This year im hunting a new property where i have to shoot a doe in order to shoot a buck. So here it is... October 25th and i cant get a stinkin doe in range. So anyways, saturday morning i was in the stand and i had a doe and 2 fawns come sprinting in to about 30 yards from me. Well i coulda smoked the two fawns, but i would feel too bad. So i was waiting for the doe, called her back to 30 yards 3 different times with the can but could never get a shot. Finally she circles in behind me at 25 yards... one more step and her vitals will be open. All of a sudden she scent checks the air and freaks out and runs like 20 yards. At this point i'm facing my tree looking behind and im thinking she winded me. Well i turn around to see where the fawns went a theres a nice 130-ish 8 pt standing at 25 yards. I havent had a shooter buck in range with an open shot in 3 years and the one year i cant shoot them they stand there and taunt me!!! What is the deal?!!? It was a great encounter though and really got the blood flowing. Guess i'll get 'em later after i shoot a stupid doe!

Re: Rattling?? Anyone give it a shot yet this ye I tried it this weekend and it didnt work at all. I actually had an 8 pt that was walking away from my, so i let him get out of sight and then hit the horns together and nothing happened... Guess he wasnt interested. O well... Maybe next weekend?

How close do you guys set up from bedding areas. Like i was thinking today as i was driving. I've usually thought about 80 yards is good... but thenw hen i actually thought how far 80 yards is, it's almost impossible to sneak up to a bedded deer that close, especially in the dark! How close do you guys get to bedding areas?

Re: Question about shoulder shots with a bow I think it might work occasionally, but not a high percentage kill shot. I'd stick w/ the double lungs.

Re: Fair Chase? What about when the deer are guilty of of a False Start... You know, you climb up in ur tree at 4 am waiting for daylight. You say to yourself "ok 15 more minutes and it'll be light enough to shoot." on cue here come the deer wandering right under you at 10-15 yards. Man we can go all ady with this one.

Is Under Armour ColdGear worth the price tag?
Sam16 replied to RangerClay's topic in Hunting Equipment
Re: Is Under Armour ColdGear worth the price tag? I have used the all weather under armour during baseball season in early april when it's around 40 degrees. It works well but dont think it's going to keep you warm under all conditions. Im a big sweater so i like that it gets the moisture away from my skin. It's your call... you got 50 bones burning a hole in your pocket? -
Re: Biggest Trophy..!? Jeez u guys got me beat, mine is about a 75 inch 5 pt w/ a shotgun at age 14. Im 17 and passed up small bucks waiting for the big boy... Those big boys are smarter than they look... haha

Re: Decoys? Yes, put the scent on the ground under the deer. If a buck comes up to smell the butt it will most likely get wind of some kind of human scent where u may have touched it or something. Also, watch the wind. And if you really wanna get tricky, try taping kleenex or something on the tail to add a lil movement in the wind. Give it a try and see what happens.

Re: Scent drags? I use old shirts, but make sure u de-scent them before u put new scent on them. It doesnt help you much if your scent drag smells like your armpit! Make sure you apply more scent every 100 yards or so, maybe less... Remember that the bucks will walk towards the scent, so make sure they dont follow it the wrong way back to your truck!

Re: october lull? I always experience it, almost every year. It gets better though!

Re: bow suggestions If your looking at PSE's, try the venom. I went to an archery shop and shot like 10 different bows. I shot all the PSE's and all the AR's. After an hour or so i chose the PSE venom, it costed me $599 so it's not cheap, but it's a good bow. Shoots real smooth. Give it a look at least.

This year just has not been my year. We started hunting a new piece of property that is very similar to public land but not quite. Well anyways i scouted all summer, i had my stand placement figured out and 3 week before the season they said the spot i had picked out was prohibited to hunters. So i had to start over from square one... We got 3 stands up and i've hunted 5 times and have only seen 1 doe at about 300 yards. I didnt even bother going this weekend cuz i was so tired of staring at trees and squirrels. Now all i wanna do is go back to my old land. You guys ever go through a dry spell like this? The worst part is that other people are killing a bunch of deer. It's in a "earn a buck" area so i cant even shoot a buck yet. One guy had 7 does down after the first week. I knew a couple other guys shot multiple does. Its so discouraging. I never thought i would sit out a weekend of hunting. I just needed to vent my anger a lil... You guys get this?

Re: Decoy Question Last year i rattled in a nice 8 pt and it came in, saw my decoy (doe decoy), stared at it about 35 yards from my tee for about 2-3 minutes, finally ran off. Guess he was waiting for it to move and it didnt. O well...
