  1. Re: Unethical laziness I got mad at my dad for something similar this season. I was in college so i didnt go one of the weekend trips, and at this particular area u are required to shoot a doe first, before a buck. So a young doe came by, my dad shot it. Later they went to recover it and the blood trail was getting sparse, and just when they were out of blood, they ran into another hunter in the stand. My dad felt horrible for that so he left the area and didnt look any more for the deer. I yelled at him and his respense, which made me even more mad was, "it was just a doe." To me, a living animal is a living animal, no matter if it's a trophy, or not. Anyways, i wouldnt have let that fly had i been there. I hope this doesnt offend anyone, becuz it';s a complete stereotype, and im sure none of you guys fall into this category, but it seems to me that gun hunters are a totally different breed than bowhunters. I dont think as many bowhunters would be guilty of stuff like this. A lot of people dont belong in the woods only hunt with a gun.

    Mock scrapes

Re: Mock scrapes Believe it or not, deer make scrapes all year long, but the majority of scrape making/pawing is from oct 15 till maybe the beginning of may, at least in Illinois. Remember, it wouldnt hurt to start them now, just make sure u put the right scents in there now. Normal buck and doe pee.
  3. Re: Hunter kicks pig Pretty cruel, probably a lot easier ways to scare it off... JMO
  4. I often watch hunting videos where after they make a kill shot and get out of the stand, they go "tracking" for the deer. The next screen they show is with the camera laying down right next to the deer's head and the 2 hunters walking up to the buck like they just found it. Please... give me a break. I'd much rather watch the over the shoulder footage of them seeing the deer for the first time than this baloney. Such a joke. Any1 agree?
  5. Re: the perfect day I'd rather have 40 degree weather with a slight breeze (blowing just right for my stand), with a beautiful sunrise to my right and the frost is lifting off of the grass and bush in front of me. I love those mornings. No deer may show up, but thats ok, haha.
  6. Re: luck from deer lures? I've been making my own decisions for the last couple years after listening to my dads way of hunting for a couple of years. No matter what time of year, my dad will put some kind of scent out. Now when i say put scent out, it means he will walk around his treestand almost 360 degrees, spreading scent out sporadically. He thinks that no matter what, if i deer comes by it will slow it down enough to make a shot, but at the asme time he makes a lot of noise and spreads his own scent by walking around for 10 minutes before he climbs his tree. I personally have never really had a deer come up and sniff scent that i put out, or go out of their way to smell what i put out. I choose rather to be stealthy and get in my stadn as quietly as possible. However i do like to make mock scrapes or scent drags during heavy rut. Any one agree with me?

    Deer Travel

Re: Deer Travel Are you talking about placing your stand to hunt out of in October? I think you are, anyways... As a general rule, deer are out feeding all night in corn fields, grass fields, sometimes woods, etc etc... and then when it gets light and sometimes before it gets light they head back into the woods and thick stuff to bed up for the day. Once it starts getting towards dusk in the afternoon they come back out and look for more food. Deer are slaves to their stomachs... but the big bucks are seen much less during day light hours. Good luck buddy!
  8. Re: Who all is from Northern Illinois? I like 20 miles south of Chicago, but i hunt carroll county and jo daviess... both in nw portion of the state...
  9. Re: Pics of my bedding area...... I have a question for SRA... can you give me a quick description of that area before you cut down trees. It is such a good idea it got me thinking where i could dot hat... was it sparse woods or what? Thanks
  10. Re: Two Nice Bucks - Which one would you take? #2 as well, but i like the 3 brows...
  11. Re: IL hunters Never heard of it?
  12. Re: AR-37 good hunting bow? I was considering buying one of the AR models when i was test shooting for my new bow. In the end i was deciding between an AR 34 and a PSE venom. All in all, i decided to go w/ the venom... Felt a lot smoother and nicer. I really love it. Give it a try.
  13. Re: Who inspired you? My father for sure. I have a picture of me from Halloween when i was two years old and my dad had me dressed up like a hunter. I have been hooked since then. I remember sitting up in a big permanent wooden stand with my dad while he hunted in silence for a couple of seasons before i got my own bow. Cant wait to hit the woods with him this year and making it our 9th year together...
  14. Well i'm 18 years old and next fall i will be going to the University of Illinois in Champaign. The problem is, i dont see myself getting much time in a treestand this fall. I have four years of limited hunting in front of me, which really has me pretty upset. I am going to try and find some hunting land in Champaign to make things easier, but even still i'd have to fit hunting in between trying not to fail out of college and frat parties. First of all, does anyone know of any hunting grounds in Champaign county? Second of all, how did u guys cope with limited hunting during four years... (or five).. of college? Thanks in advance for all your consolement, haha. Give me some pointers!

    QDM

Re: QDM I have only shot two deer in my 5 years of hunting... I've shot a doe and a small 5 pt in my second year hunting when i was 14. Since then i've passed up a loooot of deer. I'd rather have an empty tag than shoot a fork or a yearling doe. Last year i had some opportunities to shoot some bigger bucks, but just couldnt quite pull it off. I wish me and my dad had a piece of land to manage. Welp... maybe some day.

    Anybody Else

Re: Anybody Else I've got to wonder how much those Buckblasters penetrate. Need a fast bow to get that through a deer time in and time out... Just my opinion..

    scouting

Re: scouting Is there any way you can get some binoculaurs or spotting scope and watch a field from a distance. This not only lets u figure out the type of deer in the area, it also lets u scout a primary food source, watch where they enter and such. Doesnt disturb them at all, but at some point you're probably going to have to do it the hard way and do a bit of walking.
  18. Can some one please tell me the advantages of those 2 blade broadhead opposed to the 3 or 4 blades. It doesnt make any sense for some1 to reduce their cutting radius, yet i see these 2 bladers in magazines and i have a weird attraction to them. If some1 gave me a good reason to buy them, i prolly would just cuz they look mean. Can some1 explain something to me?
  19. Re: How old were you? I was 14, a 5 yard shot a yearling doe. Wont forget that one any time soon

    Deer's Eyes

Re: Deer\'s Eyes Imagine a black and white show, you can sorta tell when some1 is wearing a bright shirt or a dark shirt. I think of it as similar to that, so it can work, just not as well as camo.
  21. Re: What does deer hunting mean to you? The average person only lives to experience a couple thousand sunrises, how many have you seen? I know i've seen more than any of my friends... I've experienced so much more than the average 18 yr old from the suburbs...
  22. Re: What a day at Gander Mt.!!!!! Greg Miller is up there as one of my favorite guys to watch in a tree. Potts is obviously up there too. Those two and Waddell are my faves i think. Sounds like a cool day!
  23. Re: here She Is!!!! Awesome bow, i have that same sight on my PSE. I really think you'll love it. Good luck man, hope it works in the clutch!!!
  24. Re: Dream whitetail hunt My dream hunt would either be milk river or on my own 500 acres in southern illinois...
  25. Re: tree stand height ? I usually always hunt out of 12 or 15 foot ladder stands and they are good if you are in a tree with limbs and such to break up your outline. I kept getting busted in one of my stands cuz i sorta stuck out, every time i'd draw another deer would spot me or something. Never did get a shot out of that stand. I dont like being any higher, i hunted out of a 30 foot portable stand and was terrified the whole time and it sorta ruined the hunt. Not for me.
