Federal Flight Control Wad stuck in 2x4 @ 40 yards
silentgate replied to KYLimbHanger's topic in Turkey Hunting
Re: Federal Flight Control Wad stuck in 2x4 @ 40 yards I wrote to Federal about their new Flitecontrol shells. They suggested that you "shouldn't" use a choke that is ported or that has a wad stopper feature. They said that these type of chokes will defeat the system is most cases and a more open choke works better with the Flitecontrol. I asked about my Mossberg 835 and they suggested I start with a .665-.670 constriction without porting. Right off hand, I don't know of anybody that makes such a choke(??) Any help with this one? -
Re: Which Comp-N-Choke for 835? I received an email from the guys at Comp-N-Choke. .680 for #5's in 3.5" and .670 for #5's in 3".

Anybody out there using a Comp-N-Choke on their Mossberg 835? I'm wanting to go with 3.5" #5's. I've seen a couple of listings on recommendations for this set-up. Midwest Turkey recommends the .670 constriction for the #5's and another site I went to recommended the .680. Any thoughts?

Re: Mossberg 835 getting a bad rep. I've had my 835 for 6 yrs. now. Just last year it didn't want to cycle the 3.5" shells. I sent the gun to Mossberg and they sent it back without explaining what they had fixed. The shells cycled beautifully. So, during turkey season last year I shot a nice tom. Problem was now, the spent shell wouldn't eject. No way to get a fast second shot off if I needed one. So, off to Mossberg the gun went again! They called me and said they had no problem with the spent shells and said it must be my ammunition. Well, it wasn't my ammo! I took the gun to a gunsmith and just like on a previous post, there was a burr found. Now everything is fine and I love my 835 again. So, it could be problems like this that people have heard of and don't feel they want to put up with such repairs(??)

Re: What is your longest MISSED shot??? I just love those KY longbeards!! My longest miss was 60 yds. and my longest hit was 55 yds. All of my shots the last few years have been 20 yds. or less.

Re: Mossberg & #4 ,#5, #6 shot?? I use Winchester HV Supreme 3 1/2" #5's in my 835 with a M.A.D. Max .680 choke. Have used this combination for several years now with good results. But, as stated earlier, all guns are different. At the cost of a sore shoulder, try several different combinations to arrive at what's right for you.

Re: Brickhouse, Doghouse, Outhouse? If you're going to be bowhunting with two hunters, don't bother with the Outhouse....definitely too small!

Has anyone tried this new ammo yet? Is it worth the extra money? ($24.00 for a box of 3 1/2's)

Re: Best turkey ammunition? I'll agree that every gun shoots differently. Try a variety of makes and shot sizes. I shoot Winchester HV Supreme 3 1/2" 5 shot in my Mossberg 835 with a MADD Max choke. Has anyone tried the new Winchester Xtended Range loads yets?? At $24.00 for a box of 3 1/2's they better be GOOD!!

Re: What Locater call do you perfer? I use the owl hoot first then follow it up with a peacock scream. I have some friends that swear by a coyote howler but I personally haven't tried one.

Re: Good DVD\'s for learning to use call\'s! Don't know how many are out in DVD format yet but just about all the major call companies have video cassettes out...M.A.D., Knight & Hale, Quaker Boy, Primos, etc. I also agree that the CD's are an excellent learning tool...Knight & Hale's "Spittin' Feathers" CD's are excellent and so is M.A.D.'s "Sound Master" CD. You can find all of these at www.midwestturkeycall.com Hope this helps!

Re: What gets you excited the most? All these get me excited. But what I really get excited about is seeing the gobbler for the first time. Knowing that my calling has paid off.

Re: Turkey Hunting Catalog!!! I tell you what, guys. The best turkey hunting catalog around is Midwest Turkey Call Supply. They have just about every call that's made. You can request their new free 2005 catalog on their website. www.midwestturkeycall.com

Re: T/C Encore 50 cal fouling problem Ditto with the Pyrodex! I found it a lot easier to reload. But...I,m also using Shockwaves which in itself is another reloading disaster!

Re: My 2004 Kentucky Rifle Buck! Way to go! I hunt in Robertson and Harrison County in the North Central part of the state. A lot of nice deer here in the old Bluegrass!

Re: Gun for Son The new Remington.260 is a great caliber for the ladies and the kids. I've bought my son one for Christmas.

Re: Mossberg 835 If you were thinking about turkey hunting with it in the Spring then I would advise you to keep it! An 835 is an awesome turkey gun!

Re: nikon I have a 3x9x40 Nikon Pro Staff on my Omega. For the money you can't beat the quality. You'll love it!

Re: Leupold Rifleman For the money, you can't beat a Nikon Pro Staff!

Re: ShockWave stories wanted!!!! Shockwaves! I've developed a love/hate relationship with these bullets! They are no doubt the most accurate bullet I've shot from my .50 cal. Omega (and I've tried them all)! All the horror stories about loading them are very true. But, what's a person to do? Give up accuracy for loading convenience???? Till somebody comes out with something better, I'm sticking with my Shockwaves!

Re: Any .260 Remington shooters?? I've heard a lot of good things about the .260. I'm thinking about buying my son one for Christmas.

Re: How many KY hunters on here I'm a KY deerhunter. I hunt the north central part of the state. I got a 8 point buck and a doe opening morning within 30 seconds of each other. Pretty lucky! Hope you got one. If not, there's always muzzleloader in December! GO CATS!

Re: Remington ammo = junk Happened to me some 10 yrs. ago with Remington shells also with a Ruger. Trouble was the firing pin, not the ammo. Wouldn't hurt to check the pin.

Loved AJ's segment on gun bore cleaning. My local gunshop swears by G96 Gun Treatments and solvents and that's all they carry. I've never heard of this stuff. I've decided to go with AJ's cleaning choices but was wondering if anyone has used the G96 products(??)

Seems the older I get the harder it is for me to lift a deer into my 4wd pickup! I know the easiest solution would be to seek help. But I was just wondering if anybody else out there was having this problem and found a way to conquer this chore by themselves by using some kind of gadget or gizmo to load their deer(??)
