Little late getting on here since getting back, Tim glad to see you got home safe. When Tim says it was hard hunting he isnt even telling half the story, we ran into 4+inches of rain, TONS of hunters, and a property that had changed a great deal in the three years since I have hunted it. We gave it a shot but like the man says thats hunting. Tim is a class act for any of you who havnt had the pleasure of meeting him. He is welcome to hunt Ohio or Iowa with me any time he wants. Chris i expected to get a phone call from you at some point. Sorry we didnt hook up, but im thinking about coming back for muzzeloader since i have this tag sitting in my pocket. We will have to get together then. or you could drive out here and help me with those pesky roosters.

Wondering how everyone has been doing on the long tails(pheasents) this year? I know there are several guys who chase them on their free time in here, but i havnt seen many posts. The season started off a bust for me here in Iowa due to all the standing corn still around. The corn has come out in the last two weeks and the bird hunting has gone up. Im hunting three days a week and getting 5-6 flushes per outing, hunting an hour or two at a time. I havnt put many birds in the vest due to terrible shooting but the numbers are out there. What about the rest of you?

Best Gun for Turkey/Goose/Grouse
carbonhunter replied to 1997xltlimited's topic in Shotguns & Accessories
The wingmaster if you dont mid thye extra money. Most will prob say the mag. for the longer shell when your after ducks and turkeys, but it will add some weight in the grouse woods. I would also look at some of the Stoger(sp?) semi's they are in your range and Ive read good things about them. John didnt mention the Mossberg 835 (i think he still shoots one) If i was going to have one gun for everything that would prob. be it. The over size tube will pattern about anything well and you can shoot any length shell through it. -
Good to be out though Chris. There is so much corn standing down here in my neck of the woods that hunting is going to be tough tough tough. Opens up saturday, im pretty pumped up.

Im shooting a Ben Pearson Gamstier its 62 pounds at 29 inches. I have been shooting A/C/C's cant remember weight off the top of my head. 100 grain muzzy three blades and 5-inch vanes. Guess im going to have to rework the set up a bit. Thanks for the info guys. What arrow would you suggest for that weight. I figured since my compound was set at 70pounds these arrows would have plenty of spine for the lighter recurve (not so??). Anyway as you guys can see im very green on this one. -

Ya, I know there arnt many guys going the recurve way. The arrows seem to be flying fine. I should prob. shoot some paper to get a real idea. Have you been in the woods much? -
on public land i dont really see how your going to stop them? if its private it goes without saying that it is a one time deal for all. There are a ton of deer out there, and i hunt to have fun. Most of it comes down to the hunting partner. I only hunt with people who show the same respect in the woods i do.

so no one here is shooting a recurve huh?? -
Look back at bluelks muzzleloading chapters, i think there is a piece on lapping the barrel. i would think that would get it done.

So true Eric. I havnt gotten to see them play much here in good old iowa, but now they control there own destiny. They have a tough next five weeks. Get through the road games and i think they might be home free.

okay guys i took the plung this year and have been shooting a recurve for a couple of months. I've killed lots of deer with the compound and just wnted to switch it up a bit this year. My question is do you guys shoot feathers or vanes? 2 or 3 blade broad heads? To keep things cheap ive been shooting the arrows i used with my compound. vanes and three blade muzzys. The groups are 5-6"(paper plate size) at 20 yards but i cant tighten them up from there for some reason, im not using any sights just instinct. Im wondering if that is just the edge of my skill level or if the vanes are an issue, Im shooting right off the shelf, do you think im getting arrow bounce from the vane? or could it be the broadhead? Any help here would be awsome.

Carbon checking in from Iowa, all starts monday

The gun liked the heavy power belts the best (295grain) and when we got it zeroed it was shooting 1" groups easy. i didnt have a caliper with me but i could touch all three holes with my thumb. nice little clover leaf. and yes we where shooting the triple seven pellets. This was the first time i used 777 and was impressed with how much cleaner it burned than pyrodex. hope this helps.....i really think this may be the best muzzleloader ive ever had my hands on. Im sure some people will think im blowing smoke but i was that impressed.

That scope was on the tc triumph i shot yesterday and it worked very well, solid and only took a minute to get it sighted in
-
WOW The only word that comes to mind was WOW, my buddy just brought his new gun out to shoot yesterday. from the time i pulled the trigger to the time i reloaded after cleaning?? 2 minutes!!!!!!!!!!!! the breech plug comes right out with little or no effort, the gun is super light, shoulders very nice and looks great to. We shot 295grain power belts, 270grain plat. power belts and some 245grain barnes sabots shooting 100 grains of 777 the gun only took about 8 rounds to be sighted in 2" high at 100 yards we never pushed the distance back, but did do some shooting with 150 grains. All i can say is order mine now and hope it gets here quick enough......I have never seen anything like it, and after playing around yesterday i dont ever want to look at another breach plug.

Come on coach?? just because your young dosnt mean a thing Im 24 and i couldnt care less about his home run. I rember staying up late to watch maguire(sp?) brake the single season record. I was the happiest little kid around, then to find out about all the steroids makes me want to spit in his face. He and all roid users have disgraced americas game to the point where it isnt even our "national past time" anymore. People are sick of looking at a bunch of cheaters. Read any of the old baseball classic books "The Iowa Baseball Conf." comes to mind and what you will find are a bunch of farm kids out to bring pride to there town, there girl, and there family. it was a way to pass a sunday afternoon or a way off the farm. You cant tell me isnt a user or you cant really be kidding yourself. When BB was a rookie he was 6'4" 180 pounds (the exact weight and height I'am right now) i can promise you that even if i did nothing but lift weights and work out for the next 20 years id ever put on 70pounds of weight. No sir no hat off here. The record in my mind still stands at 755. The sad thing is what we will really be telling our kids 20 years from now is that we grew up during a time when drugs, money, and greed ruined what was once The Nations Game

red label The red label was the first O/U i owned back when i was 16 I loved that gun could hit anything with it. The ONLY problem i ever had with it was a freezing safety. But it was on a day when it was about -25 with windchill in Iowa. I had had the gun in and out of a warm car all day on the last drive a bird got up and i couldnt get the safety off. I used that gun for everything, even shot a deer with it. Would buy another one in a heartbeat

Ya well nothing new here in Iowa they do the same thing. I was unable to draw a christmas deer tag, but the local game officer and good buddy informed me not to feel bad, that they still had some of the 300 celeb. only tags left. WHAT A JOKE.

TEAM #17: The Bird Blasters
carbonhunter replied to Strut10's topic in Announcements & Online Contests
opening morning So turkey season opened here today, and i had an awsome morning, but no turkey on the ground. Got into the woods/field at 5:45 and sat while 7 differant gobblers went at it for a good three hours from the roost, the hens flew down right inot our lap and i thought it wasd going to be a gravy train. The hens moved out behind us into an open field and somehow three of the gobblers got around our back side and into the field with them. I sat and wathced the birds strut for a good hour but could never close the distance to less than 60 yards. Oh well headed out again here in an hour or so for the afternoon hunt.
