Who all uses them? I know they aren't the safest thing to use in the turkey woods, but I'm the only one supposed to be hunting the woods I do. I can recall one hunt that I feel the gobble call definately made a difference though. Had two toms all by themselves in a cattle field just off of the property line. I was set up in a small thicket/woods. They would gobble to everything I threw at them but would not come across the barbed wire fence. After about an hour of this...I hit the gobble call. Sure enough, they came right in. Just wondering if ya'll use them. I would NEVER use one on public land of course.
Re: How should I set my pins?
My pins are 20,30,40...Just set them up however you want, then shoot all different distances between those pin settings and note the amount of variance. If there is alot, you can adjust pins accordingly, or add pins.
Re: Coyote Controversy
I wish I could help, but I don't know alot about coyotes. It just goes to show how we as sportsmen have to be very careful of our actions to avoid being scrutenized by those who are misinformed about how we are a management tool and are a benifit to the game we pursue.
Re: TURKEY TEAM #24
So, Buckslayer, you're going to bowhunt? Any others bowhunting? I had thought about it, but I like being mobile and bowhunting turkey usually involves a blind....I'll be using my Mossberg 500 Turkey Special (woodland camo), sporting my BSA red-dot. I love the red-dot. I feed my gun 3" Winchester Supreme #5's.
Re: Release or no release?
Yes, I use a release. I also enjoy traditional archery as well. There are still many hunters that prefer to shoot with fingers due to the readiness to draw at any time. It definately takes alot more practice to be proficient releasing with fingers though. One time on the way out from my stand I came right up on a nice doe...after I had taken my release off of course. I went home and just tried shooting my compound with fingers just to see, and I'm glad I never attempted a shot. I was WAY off.
Anyone got any suggestions on a cheap pond aerator? I bought a house last fall with an acre pond. A buddy of mine has a windmill that pumps air into a sunked air diverter. I don't really want to have to run power all of the way to the pond to hook up a pump. Any ideas?
Re: My bows
Very nice Jim! Now that the weather has broke I have been shooting my recurve and longbow alot. Yesterday was a pretty good day of shooting, have noticed my groups shrinking even since last fall when I was shooting alot. DEFINATELY shooting better with the recurve. At 20 yards all good lung shots with the recurve(Bear Grizzly). With the Hill longbow, I can somewhat keep them in the lung area but still have some flyers...but it's still me yet. I still have more tweeking to do with my brace height and might move my nock point up slightly yet. I might have to pick your brain here before too long if you don't mind since you seem to know a good deal about trad gear. I have already decided that the first three weeks of early archery are going to be devoted to harvesting my first deer with trad gear. I would like to use the longbow, but it all depends on my confidence level when season comes around. What broadheads do you favor? Do you mostly shoot cedar shafts? I'm so PUMPED to get my first trad harvest!!
Re: How old were you when you killed your first tu
26 years old here. Weren't many turkey in this part of the state when I was younger. I think the first season was in 1995 I think. They are sure thriving now! Took my first bird, a jake with a 5 1/2" beard with a H&R single shot 12 gauge full choke. Little over 20 yard shot put him down.
Re: release loop
I could be wrong, but I think it would be safe to say that more archers are using loops now than don't. The three biggest advantages with loops are no torque on the string, the release is directly behind the arrow providing a more accurate release, and they save your string serving from wear. I will always use a loop.
Re: Just A Question!
Not my case, but my truck has a sticker from virtually every product that I use and are worthy of displaying. Just a few..Muzzy, Hoyt(don't have a Ross one...YET!), Realtree, NWTF, Mc Kenzie, Easton, Winchester, Primos....
Re: Trails???
I find that deer change their travel patterns when the foilage changes here. Early season they could be anywhere. As the fall progresses and the food sources change, they change their movements with available food sources, thus changing the trails they frequent. When the snow starts, I have noticed they tend to head for the thicker cover left. They will use the same trails year to year as long as something doesn't change. A few years back a huge wind storm blew down several large trees in one area. All but one trail in a 20 yard area went dead as they altered their course around the tangled mess. Just my observation, but where I hunt, deer rarely use the same trails in hard winter that they do in the summer or early fall.
