Re: Elk Hunting 2005 - 2006 [ QUOTE ] I Wish I could get out that way and hunt some of them! [/ QUOTE ] I consider myself very lucky to live in Montana, with so many ooportunities just minutes from my house. As for elk, I passed up a shot at a young bull the first morning I went out and have not gotten any other opportunities. Haven't gotten out too much, with kids football keeping me very busy. I can honestly say too, that gas prices have slowed me down. A few more days of bow season and then rifle starts on the 23rd.

Re: Chargers/Steelers..MNF For the sake of arguement, I will disagree with you guys on this one. The rule has been in place forever and I've seen it enforced many times. Until that ball hits the ground, the punt returner (who called for the fair catch) is the only one who can touch the ball and he can't be interfered with. The ball did not hit the ground and therefore was not a live ball for everyone to go after. I think it was absolutely the right call. I don't necessarily agree with the rule though. On another note, I am just plain sick of all the penalty flags this year in all levels of football. It's unreal. It's next to impossible to have a pass play without pass interference or holding called.

Re: TEAM 24 My vote is for Team Droptine. I do have the opportunity to hunt those stinky mulies, but I prefer chasing the whitetails around.

Re: Football rules question That's a good question - my son asked me the same question a couple weeks ago. I think in the last couple years the NFL has been looking for ways to speed up the game and now the clock only stops on out-of-bounds plays during certain times in the game - like the last few minutes of the second and fourth quarters. I don't know the exact rule, but it's definitely a change from the past.

Re: I need you Christians. Prayers sent Jeramie. Here's how my three kids came out: 1. 6 weeks early - natural birth and no health issues. 2. right on time and breach - cesarian - healthy kid. 3. 2 weeks early and natural birth following a cesarian (definitely can happen). I know you're worried, but I'm sure it will all work out. Best of luck to the three of you!

Re: does rattlng work? I've had rattling work a few times. The most memorable was many years ago I spotted a buck in a big meadow with about 15 does and fawns. There was no way to get to him so I decided to try rattling from about 150 yards away. The first sequence he never even looked my way. I waited 5 minutes and tried again....he looked my way this time, but just kept feeding. The instant my antlers clashed for the third try it set him off and here he came. He walked down a fenceline to an opening and then he was on a string. I drew my bow practically in self defense at 5 yards because I thought he was coming into the brush to see me. Couldn't get a shot as he whirled and ran. The point is, you have to be patient and it might just take several tries to get a buck interested. I've also heard of guys accidentally banging their antlers getting into a treestand and had deer on top of them before they could get settled in. Seems like all deer react differently. I use real shed antlers and have never tried the bags.

This is something that's had me puzzled for years. Here's the story: It's opening morning of my first ever bow hunt about 15 years ago. I'm in a stand and wouldn't you know a bachelor group of 4 velvet bucks is walking head to tail right into my shooting lane and they stop practically overlapping. Well, there's no question about which one to take, as he was a 4-point and the others were forked horns. Of course I was shaking to no end, but I drew back and carefully put my 20 yard pin behind the shoulder and released. I didn't see the flight of the arrow, but heard a smack and watched as the 4-point ran off with no arrow sticking out and not noticably hit......all 4 deer went opposite directions. I watched him for 15 minutes as he left the area and it was clearly a clean miss. About a half hour later I got out of the stand and went to retreive my arrow....but couldn't find it anywhere and boy was I getting mad until I looked down and saw a drop of blood.....and then another....and another....going the opposite direction of the 4-point! To make a long story shorter, I shot the wrong deer and a perfect shot it was!!!!! So my question is.....did I miss so badly on the 4-point and accidentally make a perfect shot on a different deer...or did I simply aim at the wrong deer???? I thought for sure I had the right buck in my sites. To this day my buddies give me a hard time about flock shooting deer lol!

Re: Upcoming Elk / Deer Hunt in MT [ QUOTE ] I was wrong it is 121 -- I take that it good news from what I read in your post. [/ QUOTE ] I think 121 has better trophy potential - especially for deer of both species. Districts 201 and 202 are south of 121 and probably have more elk overall, but 121 is good also. The Cabinet Mountains are perhaps my favorite mountain range in the state and there are some monster bulls living there, but the terrain is difficult to hunt and the vegetation is extremely thick! I don't know anything about your guide, but I'm guessing you will have opportunities to harvest an elk and the deer are plentiful. What week are you hunting? Deer hunting really picks up towards the end of November with the rut. Weather is always the wildcard up there. An early dump of snow will improve your chances.

Re: Upcoming Elk / Deer Hunt in MT Good choice - no need for the pistol although my hunting partner took a beatiful 140 class whitetail buck last year in NW Montana with his .357. It's interesting that you will be hunting Districts 201 and 202, with your guide being located in the heart of District 121 (at least according to their website). The country around Trout Creek is awesome, with the Cabinet Mountain Wilderness nearby and plenty of deer and elk in HD 121. I know guides have to stick to their designated areas, so maybe 201 and 202 are "his" area, but it's a fair drive from Trout Creek everyday if that is where you are staying. Anyway, I wish you the best of luck!!!

Re: Upcoming Elk / Deer Hunt in MT [ QUOTE ] I'm considering whether or not to carry my 44 Mag pistol with me. Is it worth the extra weight since I'm carrying a rifle anyway? [/ QUOTE ] Not sure why you would carry a pistol unless you plan to hunt with it. I wouldn't worry about bears if that's why. A relative of mine hunted this area over the weekend and the bulls were fired up but they didn't get any shooting in. The terrain is steep, steep, steep over there!!! Good area for sure and hopefully your guide will provide you with some good opportunities. What guide service are you using?

Re: Upcoming Elk / Deer Hunt in MT I know NW Montana quite well - what is the general area that you will be hunting? This area is best known for its whitetails, but there's some huge bulls and mulies too. Are you hunting public land or private? I go there every year chasing whitetails and have a handful of mature bucks to my credit. NW Montana lost 50-75% of its deer herd in 1996-97 and now finally has a strong number of 4+ yearold deer in the population. Let me know if you have any questions or want advice on anything. Good luck!

Re: Ever use Google Earth?? It is pretty cool. I loaded it at work and then was promptly told I had to get rid of it for legal reasons. What a bunch of baloney.

Re: Would this affect arrow flight??? [ QUOTE ] THATS VERY FUNNY ,Did you get the antelope [/ QUOTE ] Only got one opportunity and missed low. Had an absolute blast chasing them around though. I was hunting earlier this month before the rut....next time I will plan a trip for right about now. Gotta go - I'm chasing elk this afternoon.........

Woke up from a little nap while sitting on a watering hole waiting for antelope and found these little critters resting on my broadhead/arrow. How do you think they would do at 200+ fps??? I just thought it was a cool picture. [image][/image]
