  1. I see Nike cancelled his contract and Reebok is suspending his jersey sales. How stupid can the guy be? First off, pro athletes are highly scrutinized and the media are like bloodhounds and they uncover anything and everything that these people do these days. What a dummie...
  2. I thought it was great that Cabrera won it as he was self taught and came from nothing. Waddling up the fairways smokin the heaters!! That was funny. He smoked that one drive about 380 or so. Wow. Plus I'm a Jack Nicklaus fan so I'm happy as long as Tiger doesn't win. I'd love to see Jack's record stay intact although I doubt that will happen as Tiger is ahead of his pace at his age. Furyk made a bad decision on club selection as he was already at +5 and didn't need to birdy. Par-Par to end it would've been good enough.
  3. Todd is right about that. I started using mouth calls first. About 10 years ago I switched to using primarily slate calls and have taken quite a few birds. Over the years of spending preseason in some areas where I could view and hear hens alot along with getting into calling contests with them during hunting, I've learned their different calls and how to mimic them on the slate. I'm not knocking mouth calls at all and I should probably use them more for close calls when you want the bird to perk up for a shot but for me I just enjoy using slates. I've taken a few with box calls too and they are probably the easiest to master.
  4. Just returned from Wisconsin. I started out the first morning with blind, decoys, and bow only to have a huge gobbler strutting at about 80 yards but he and his hens didn't want anything to do with me. Tried everything I could think of but they weren't buying it. I switched later in the morning to the gun and went to the run n' gun approach which I enjoy. I got two gobblers to respond at noon and traded calls with them and then played it silent. They didn't move from their position on the opposite hillside so I figured they might have hens with them. I circled downhill to a different position along an old logging road and called again. Wouldn't you know it...they gobbled where I'd been 10 minutes before. I switched to soft clucks and purrs. A few minutes later down the road they came single file. Caught me with the gun down and were at full alert when I slowly raised the gun and knocked the lead bird down. He had a good beard at 10", one spur at 15/16", and the other was worn off at .5" but he only weighed 19.5 lbs. Strange as a bird with that size beard from that area is normally around 22 to 23 lbs. Anyway, one down and one hunt in Minnesota this next weekend to go. We had a great time camping/hunting and one of the guys, Kevin, got his first bird as well. http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x249/ironranger1961/wisconsinGobbler.jpg http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x249/ironranger1961/WIhuntLandscape.jpg http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x249/ironranger1961/TheCrew.jpg http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x249/ironranger1961/DeadmanCanyon1.jpg http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x249/ironranger1961/Jeff-ValleyView.jpg
  5. The truth hurts and in this day and age of politicial correctness, it's good to see someone actually stand up and tell it like it is. Good for you Curt!! I think intentionally walking him from now until he retires would fix the issue...
  6. Jeff Gordon. He won 3 of 4 championships driving against Dale Earnhardt, one of the best ever...
  7. Re: Ouch [ QUOTE ] Tiger in the final round, pretty good odds if your a Tiger fan he will pull out another major. That course yesterday was just brutal, today it may be the same!! [/ QUOTE ] Put a fork in em'. He appears to be done but you never know...
  8. Re: Who all plays baseball here? Played from the time I was 8 until about 30 up thru high school, college, pro tryouts that didn't go anywhere, and amateur ball. Then played softball till around 40 when the competitiveness starting gettin the best of my body. Now it's just golf in the summer and it's alot easier on my limbs...
  9. Re: Ouch Being a lefty, I really like Michelson but just wish he would make better decisions on the course. He's had a history of it and it seems like he never learns. Good entertainment though and you are right about that...It's good to see them struggle like us regular duffers...
  10. Re: And It Begins [ QUOTE ] I think everyone should take the Russ Springer approach and bean him every time he comes to the plate. Why waste three pitches walking him? [/ QUOTE ] I'm glad I'm not the only one that is thinking they should walk him every time!! Bean him is even better...
  11. Re: If you could go back... I'd say "Miracle on Ice" as I grew up a block from Buzzy Schneider who scored one goal against the Russians and played great the whole Olympics for them. It was an inspiring time for all of us in Babbitt...
  12. Re: Mark Martin With the start that he's got going, it's a shame if he doesn't. Still competitive...
  13. Re: Which Reddot?? I've been using a Bushnelll trophy red dot and really like it. Multiple reticles, 11 brightness settings, taken a few birds with it already and I'm shooting 3.5" shells so it's been durable. For the price (I've seen them for around $75 to $80) and quality, thus far it's been a good scope for me...
  14. Re: Completly new to turkeys! Birddog, hope your brother's first experience is a positive one. Just realize that any TV shows you watch are not the way most typical hunts go!! I've been hunting turkeys since around 1985 in Minnesota and Wisconsin and it was frustrating at first but these days there are alot of videos on calling and also alot of TV shows to learn basic calling cadence from. Starting out...you really don't have to get a ton of gear. A basic 12 gauge (or 20 at shorter ranges) will do and there are a ton of turkey chokes out there if you want a really tight pattern. There again, a full choke will probably suffice for reasonable ranges. Head to toe camo is a good idea but if you are using a blind then wearing black is probably the way to go once inside the blind. Decoys...not absolutely necessary but for first season they might come in handy. I've shot most of my turkeys without them as I usually hunt later seasons and have had alot of birds spook on them. As far as call, many different kinds will work. Box calls is probably the easiest to learn and also the slate call. Get a calling video and learn to cluck, purr, and yelp. Every turkey responds differently to calls and most times a person really doesn't have to call as much as what they do on TV. Where abouts in MN are you located? If you want more information feel free to shoot me an email...
  15. Re: A True Champion... I remember watching the race and it definitely made me misty eyed. Those horses are something else and he had the potential to be a triple crowner for sure. Just a bummer...
  16. Re: Twins Win Division!! Got that right Todd. I'm hoping they play out of their heads and take it as far as they can. Doubt they have the team to do it as I guess they would be considered a "Small market" team but you never know in the playoffs...
  17. Re: Oh Happy Day! JG = DNF Plenty of races left!! Go Gordon...
  18. Detroit lost today and the Twins won to win the Al Central. Also, Joe Mauer, Twins Catcher, won the AL Batting Title. Not bad for a 23 year old catcher. Not sure how they'll do in the playoffs but there are in...
  19. Re: Ryder Cup I hope Tiger and the rest of the USA go out and stomp some euro rear. Although I haven't been a big Tiger fan, I'm coming around in that area. Go USA!! It's the same broken record...The English and French and other Euro countries take every opportunity to cut us down. Not to get off the golf subject but it's a funny thing how the French and British forget what we did for them in WWII. How the boys turn it around...
  20. Re: Deion Sanders.. Anything he may have done on the playing field was cancelled out by his mouth and "ME ME" attitude. T.O. is the current version of Deon on the field!! As for seeing Deon in the booth, the less the better...
  21. Re: OK, Best Sports Analyst of all Time... Two of my favorites were Curt Gowdy and Jim McKay...
  22. Re: Gordon I'd agree with what was said and add that I always enjoyed watching Dale Sr. race, seeing him on Realtree outdoors, or wherever and felt that emptiness inside when he died. I also like Gordon and know that alot of people don't which is fine. Gordon did manage to win a few championships while racing against one of the best there was...Dale Earnhardt. For that, he has my respect. I don't think you can say that about too many other current drivers out there...
  23. Re: Tour De France Winner nailed for steroids At the start of the tour, I was wondering if something weird wasn't going on with this cycling Org that does the testing. They kicked out Ullrich and Basso for "Alleged contact" with a doctor that was busted and as far as I know that was all they had and now this. It makes you wonder how accurate that testing is. Landis had an exemption from the Tour to take cortisone shots for pain in his hip, which will require surgery for a degenerative condition, and was taking an oral medication for hyperthyroidism. He and his doctor were consulting with experts to see if those drugs might have thrown off his testosterone levels.
  24. Re: The British Open Yes Finn, it's going to be a battle! I wouldn't mind seeing De Marco win too or see Garcia actually play well on a Sunday for once as he always seem to fall off and it would do wonders for his confidence. Then again, I understand the pressure these guys are under. I shot 3 under one time in a tourney and the next day I shot an 84. These guys are good. Shouldn't have said what I did the other day about Tiger as I was having a really bad day and shouldn't have been posting anything!! I've never been a fan of his and I think it has to do more with the media than him. He's a great player but there are other good players as well. It's also good to see Duvall playing better. He made the cut but still has a long ways to go before he'll start contending for tourneys...
  25. Re: The British Open Sorry Tominator, no offense meant with the language...
